CABLE CALLS "The FAM at 8: The post-Civil-War west comes to life in this actioner about the life and times of three brothers. The tale is based on Louis L' Amour's novels and has a cast of familiar faces, Tom Selleck, Sam Elliott and Glenn Ford. "This Will Be Laughing Week." Nearly all the songs are catchy and upbeat. "Tell Me What You Want," and "I'm All Out of It Now" both exemplify this with a casual, foot tapping beat and choruses that are easy to sing along with. The main exception is "A Million Hearts," a slow ballad about an obsessed, jilted high schooler.

The title track is one more in a long line of marijuana anthems sung by college bands. The band also performed a couple of inspiring covers. Their version of Night Ranger's "When You Close Now Open Thursday Ultimate Fakebook brought their "power-pop" sound back to Manhattan this past Thursday for a show at Auntie Mae's. Playing songs from their new album "This Will Be Laughing Week," the band kept the audience rocking and bouncing all night. Alternate Fakebook (AFB), opened the show with covers of Ultimate Fakebook's early scream rock songs.

The local band features Bill McShane on vocals and guitar, Nick Colby on bass guitar, and Eric Melin on drums. McShane and Colby formed the band in 1994 and drafted Melin, formerly of Truck Stop Love. With the release of their new album, Ultimate Fakebook is building on the success of their award-winning first album, "Electric Kissing Parts." Ultimate Fakebook combines the best of 80's and 90's alternative to create a driving -hard pop sound. From 80's alternative, the band derives its optimistic, upbeat attitude, best heard in McShane's tenor voice. His sudden shifts in pitch and exaggerated pronunciations give the words a lyrical quality missing from many contemporary singers.

Of course, the band leaves behind the Evenings UntilSp.m BRUCE HUTCHINSON ARTS CRITIC shallow, synthesized feel so common with the 80's. Instead, the group relies on the driving guitar sound prevalent in 90's alternative and college music. This mix gives their songs the edge that modern audiences demand in popular music while avoiding the droll cynicism that seems to lurk behind today's alternative sound.
