He was deeply interested in and committed to the lives of his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was supportive in times of need with his very practical wisdom and his wicked sense of humour. In his youth, Alfred was a national champion swimmer.

From that time on, sports and particularly swimming, were major passions in his life. In his retirement, he worked long and hard to document the history of competitive swimming in North America at the Montreal Swimming Club, drawing particular attention to the many early champions in the sport.
