MP Wants Paid Trip To Cyprus (By The CP). Arnold Petersl-year-old ,New Dem ocrat, made a- Dittn in the Commons 'Thursday for a (re? air ride to Cyprus for a persona on-thespoc look at the situation there. ' The MP for Timiskaming sa.d he. and several other MPs had asked 'for a ' free ride' "'on the government's plane flying from Canada, to ; the Mediterranean t rouble spot but were turned down.,' The government a$ "scared to let MPs go t(o CyJ-nis as individuals because they would find ' out" what : United Nations orders , have been given to Canadian troops in the UN peacekeeping force on the;,is;and, he said. ' - He said be wanted to make the trip during the planned Easter recess washed out by overtime sittings to see how the soldiers were living and to find out about, Cyprus political and economic problems.-' , He was still willing, to go. External Affairs Minister Martin said there is no law forbidding an MP from pay-ing his own way to Cyprus on a commercial airliner. Mr. Peters said he didn't feel so' strongly about a trip " to Cyprus to pay his own. way. ; " I'm" hot doing this as i vacation.' he said. The trip was to learn about Cyprus and so 'assist him to his .role in, Parliament. r" : Jury Says No Seat Belt Death Factor The fatal injuries received by a 58-year-o!d motorist when his! .car collided with the rear of ' another car on the Queensway near Blair Road Feb. 21 "might .have been 'of a lesser degree had seat belts, been installed and "been in. use" in his car. a coroner's jury said Thursday. Lionel Rivard. of ,19 Sweet-land Avenue, died about 26 hours after the accident in St. Louis de Monitor? Hospital a result of shock from severe . internal injuries to his stomach. - according to the medical evi dence. f:-Dr. E. L. boaville, who formed ah operation on Mr. Rivard m an attempt to save his life, said his type of injuries "could have been prevented by seat belts. This case is a nice argument for seat belts," he said. . The Jury said "it would ap pear that the accident occurred . as the result of Mr. . Rivard's vehicle being driven at exces- sive speed and it is felt that this factor- contributed to Mr. Rivard's death." Tha driver of the second car. Andre Major, 21, of 1678 Bank Street, who received minor injuries in the accident, said he was travelling about 55 to 60 miles per hour prior to the accident He said he could not. remember what happened. According to police evidence. Mr. Rivard's car skidded 221 feet from the point at which i "the . front of Mr. Rivard's vehicle came in contact with . the rear of Mr. Major's vehicle. The accident occurred about 600 yards west of Blair Road, at about 10.30 p.m. .
