Patriot victory thwarted a grand scheme of invasion of the Southern colonies. Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site at Flat Rock near Hendersonville is the first National Historic Site commemorating the work of a literary artist. The site is Connemara, a 240-acre farm Sand- burg lived on for the last 22 years of his life. He lived here longer than in any other house. North Carolina was the first state to have a national seashore. Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers a mecca for visitors. Clingman's Dome observation tower in the Great Smoky Mountains National park offers a spectacular view.
