merges with beautiful music Disc-cussion Ibut particular favorites are It's I Only a Paper Moon, Honeysuckle I Hose, and Mean to Me. Mean playing that hurts oh, so I sweetly is the.product of Basie. I Sims and back-up drummer, Louis [ Bellson. The only regret is that · Basic's orchestra drummer, Char- fleston native Butch Miles, didn't [ get a shot at playing. » THE BIG 3: Milt Jackson-Joe Pass-Ray Brown, Pablo Records, 2310-757. What a change of pace this .trio provides, exploring new dimensions of expression with vibes, guitar and bass. Jackson, Pass and Brown sparkle on Duke Ellington's Come Sunday, and produce positively heavenly sounds on Moonglow and You Stepped Out of a Dream. Every young percussionist should buy this record and play it again" and again and again. The same advice goes to aspiring guitarists. These three musicians wrote the book and this record is one delicious chapter. NOBODY IN MIND, featuring vocalist Joe Turner, accompanied by Milt Jackson and Roy Eldridge, Pablo Records, 2310-760. With the exceptions of / Want a Little Girl and Red Sails in the Sunset, this album is gut level blues at its deepest hue. Turner is the master of the shout- and-wail blues singers, his voice at ' times remarkably mellow and at. times gratingly harsh. Travel somewhere between Billy Eckstine and Louis Armstrong and you find Big Joe Turner. Album standouts: Nobody in itfinrf, How Long, How Long Blues, and Juke Joint Blues. Strictly for the connoisseur who likes to savor the bending, shaping, transforming of a melody line. »· BAHIANA, featuring trumpeter Dizzy Giiiespie, Pablo Records, 2-record set. 2625-708. Giiiespie at his dizziest, blowing wild high notes. These records have a curiously Latin flavor, spending much time on long renditions of Samba, Barcelona, Pete and Olinga. There are other trumpeters I much prefer, but for Giiiespie fans these records will be meat and drink. J. -- Whiil was the st-rit's in which BnrlKini Stanwyck starred hclnrc "The Big VallVy?"
