This week at Sunrise John Wayne appears as a bunny in the season premier of "Laugh In" at 8 p.m., Sept. 11 on NBC-TV. Hollywood's Rona Barrett plowing barren ground By Lawrence Laurent © 1972, The Waslimgon Post Miss Rona B a r r e t t stretched to her full 5 feet and declared: "I'm not a gossipist. I'm a reporter." Miss Barrett, who prefers to be called "Miss Rona," is the first regularly scheduled entertainment columnist in television news. Her weekday programs are carried by about 50 television stations. She is also selling a tape recorded series to the nation's radio stations and her first book, "The Lovo- maniacs" (Nash Publishing) entered the bookstores on Sept. 6. She occupies her spare time with TV specials on such topics as the Academy Awards and Hollywood's love goddesses. She is, then, the successor to such Hollywood trivialists of the past as Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons. Each in her lime terrorized the film industry. There isn't much left to terrorize in today's film business. Production has shrunk to depression dimensions or has run away to Europe, leaving the film business with an unemployment rate of about 40 per cent. Attendance at motion pictures has dropped from a peak of about 95 million tickets a week to a low of about 17 million a week. The ~ major studios are kept alive by producing programs for television and to much of the public the flow is about as fascinating as 'the water that flows from spigots in the kitchen. Worse, the new morality of the 1970s has removed just about all the shock value that used to belong to news about romantic triangles among performers or even the sexual aberrations of the stars. Miss Rona, plainly, is plowing barren ground. But she does it with a zest and a single minded purpose that is impossible to ignore. Those persons who admire Miss Barrett like to refer to her as a "busy, bouncy little dynamo" and the description is certainly accurate. Those who are not her admirers are apt to call her a "female Sammy Glick," an unflattering comparison with the hero of Budd Schulberg's grasping, hotly ambitious hero of "What Makes Sammy Run." The non-admirers dwell on the artificially silvered hair and the speech that was manufactured by a Los Angeles speech t h e r a p i s t . Tales are told, by the hour, about persons who befriended Miss Rona only to find themselves featured later as the villiar of a fan magazine article or a purring TV account. The knocks have no noticeable effect on Miss Barrett. She has her own version of each tale directed against her and besides, a reporter--she says--has no obligation to her profession. She did have a miserable childhood. A muscular problem kept her in and out of hospitals until she was 13 years old. By then, she was a chubby, round-faced little girl who had to suffer teasing from other children. Her father owned a grocery store, and when she (Continued From Page 9s) TV Movies Monday "Tarzan and the Amazons," (1945) **, 7:30 p.m., © with Johnny Weissmuller and Brenda Joyce. * * * "The Anderson Tapes," 9 p.m., QO©©© with Sean Connery and Dyan C»nnon.
