Next Friday and Saturday in Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium is something billed as the 15th Annual Ohio Valley Kool Jazz Festival. Don't kid yourself, there's going to be much more rock and soul than jazz at the festival--just as there has been the past two or three years. Among the stars of this "jazz" festival are Marvin Gaye. the Temptations, Natalie Cole and Archie Bell the Drells. Gaye, the Temps, Nancy Wilson, the Drells and Norman Connors are on tap Friday night (show time is 7:30 p.m.). while the Spinners, Ms. Cole, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. B.B. King, the Chi-Lites and Roy Ayers Ubiquity are on tap Saturday (same show time). Tickets are available from Ohio Valley Kool Jazz Festival, 3522 Erie Ave., Cincinnati. Ohio 45208. Prices are $6.75, $7.75, and $8.75, with a limited number of field seats at $10. There are six giant closed circuit TV screens, so even far seats have a pretty good view. On Aug. 1, the Doobie Brothers will make a concert appearance here in Charleston, and if their show is anything like the one they presented late last year in Huntington, you'll hear as much jazz from them as you will in Cincinnati. In their Cabell appearance, the Brothers were joined by the Memphis Horns, who sparked the set with some excellent jazz charts. The show moved smoothly and was filled with fine music. There was little "flash." just good music. The Doobie Brothers currently have an album, To/tin' /( to the Streets. Freakshqw which is very much jazz-influenced. It's quite good, as I'm sure their concert will be. Also on the bill with the Doobies. is the newest supergroup (although they ask not to be called that). Firefall. Firefall's music is delicious country-rock fare, but the band is relatively new to live appearances. It might be an uneven performance, but it should be worth it. Coming up later in August is another outdoor festival for West Virginia. This one is outside Huntington--20 minutes north of the city on Rt. 2. according to the promoters. The three-day event-Aug. 20-22-is called Grey Wood, and the producers bill themselves as "Sgt. Pepper Presents." The site is even called Sgt. Pepper Park. Headlining the concert are two "name" bands. Wet Willie and Danny and the Juniors--two very diverse groups. Wet Willie you're familiar with; Danny and the Jrs., however, haven't been heard of in a w h i l e , and I'm not sure how- many--if any--original band members remain. They gave us At the Hop, among other hits way back when. Also listed on the schedule of bands are Shadow, Maddog, Lead- storme. Swan. Bing Bros., Crossfire. Foxwagon, United Sound, Titus. B u f f a l o Creek Exp., W. Va. Ramblers and the ABC Boogie Band--all relative unknowns. If you want to take your chances on this one, tickets are available from Audio Tape and Records in Huntington at $10. At the gate, the price will be $15 for the weekend or §6 per day. x ision Movies tuesdav "CRY VENGEANCE," (1954) "*, with Mark Stevens and Martha Hyer.
