Some ex- citment, but a bit dated. 9 a.m., cable channel 10. 'PURPLE HEART," (1944) *·**, with Dana Andrews and Richard Conte. Powerful, brutal story of the trial of the crew of a flying fortress shot down by the Japs during the Tokyo raid. 1 p.m., cable channel 10. "CRUEL TOWER," (1957) ***, with John Ericson and Mari Bianchard. Drifter takes a job as a steeplejack, incurs-jealousy over a girl. Suspenseful melodrama with some hair-raising scenes showing the steeplejacks at their work. 3 p.m., cable channel 10. "DAYTON'S DEVILS," (1968) **, with Leslie Nielsen and Lainie Kazan. An ex-Army colonel trains a team of experts in order to pull a $1.5 million heist at a Strategic Air Command base. Routine. This was Kazan's film debut. 10 p.m., cable channel 10. "A BRAND NEW LIFE," (1973) ***,. Among the best of made-for- TV fare. An honest, touching and thoroughly human story about a couple married for 18 years who discover they are about to become parents for the first time. Cloris Leachman has never been better and Martin Balsam, as her husband, is also good. 11:30 p.m., O CD The story of the annual qiigration of the wildeheeste will be told in a special at 8 p.m., Thursday, July 22 on NBC-TV.
