Has CHS Been Rebuilt To Champions hip Form? Mountain Lion Receiver P. D. Phillips PUBLIC NOTICE 408 BROAD ST. We Rent General Motors Cars WE NOW RENT CHEVROLET TRUCKS ······. Budget Rent a Can Charleston High School's football team puts its gear away a week earlier last season than it did the previous three campaigns. The Lions of coach Frank Vincent, after ruling the Class AAA football roost for three straight undefeated, championship seasons, sat out last year's playoff tilt licking the wounds that come with a 5-4 record. BEFORE THE 1971 season opened, Vincent admitted that it would be a rebuilding season. The question is, has Charleston been rebuilt back to its old championship form yet? Vincent says he doesn't know yet. He says, for one thing, the Lions are still rebuilding. "We lack experienced depth," said Vincent. "We have some fine football players with good speed. But Frank Vincent llth Year At Charleston we also have a lot of players who haven't seen a lot of . action." So Vincent is taking a wait and see attitude. "Our success will depend on how quickly our youngger players come around," Vincent said. * * * BUT VINCENT admits "we CHARLESTON AT A GLANCE Coach: Frank Vincent 1971 Record: 5-4 1972 Outlook: As usual, Charleston has talent and speed and should improve on last year's record, but the Lions are young and lack experience. If the new players develop early in the season, CHS might be hard to stop. 1972 Schedule 1971 Score Sept. 2 Triadclphia, away 24-14 Sept, 9 Greenbrier East, home " ". And if Vincent lets himself be the least bit optimistic in his outlook, it's because of players like: Paul Daugherty, a rugged 62, 200-pound fullback who has amazing speed and agility for his size. Daugherty, who will .play offensive fullback and defensive linebacker, runs the 100 in 10.4 and is agile enough to compete in the hurdles on the CHS track team. Curt Calloway, a 6-2, 180 pound halfback with speed to burn, who scored 42 points last year for Charleston as a sophomore. P. D. Phillips, talented junior who plays end both on offense and defense; and linemen Paul Alexander Tommy Markham and Martin Miller, who will head up the returnees on defense. * * ^ PLUS A STRONG group of sophomores including backs Sam Hart and Ernie White and linemen Chancy Cunningham. Joey Brison, Timmy Stewart, Chuck Parsons, Larry Black and Larry Cundiff. The Mountain Lions will have a new quarterback, Steve Brown, a 5-10, 180 pounder who was the substitute signal-caller last season. "If hard work and attitude have anything to do with it," we'll have a fine season," said .Vincent.
