West Virginia Split Level House Elegant Outside Practical Inside By Andy Lang The Afiociated Preti Design R-177 is an appealing split level, combining an elegant exterior with a carefully planned interior. Outside, the highest portion of the facade has four windows set into a wall of brick veneer under an attractive gable. The rest of the house utilizes horizontal bevel wood siding. Grading is gentle, resulting from the few steps between the living and family room levels, and the ground floor location of the two-car garage. Inside are all the features that make split level desirable to many persons, with a convenient kitchen level main entrance, bedroom privacy on the upper level, good relationships between levels (especially between the kitchen dinette and the family room), a spare room on the ground floor and a sizable basement. A double-door entrance leads from a covered portico to a spacious main-level reception foyer. To the left of the foyer is an attractive L-shaped living room and dining room. To the rear of the foyer is a spacious kitchen-dinette. The kitchen is a U-shaped room with a rear wall. One of the most dramatic features in this house, created by architect Samuel Paul, is the relationship between the dinette and family room. The dinette overlooks the family room and is separated from it by a wrought iron rail. Large windows and sliding glass doors in the dining room overlook the rear garden. The ground floor contains a family room stretching 24'4", a spare room, a full bathroom and a good-sized laundry-sewing room. The family room is open to the dinette. It features plenty of windows and glass and a real brick fireplace, which, incidentally can be seen from the kitchen itself. An oversized two-car garage is located on this floor as well. It has storage space and a door to the rear. The upper floor includes three bedrooms and two full baths. The master bedroom features a dressing room, a walk-in closet and its own private bathroom, putting it almost into the category of a suite. A basement is located under the living room level, providing ample space for utilities, storage and a recreation room if desired. Extra room on the same level can be utilized as desired, since there are three bedrooms upstairs.
