"This is the biggest ball club we've had here,' 7 McCoy remarked. "We've had small teams before." In the past, the "small 1 Generals have stressed speec and a high-scoring offense to crank out 40 straight victories going into this season. This is a West Virginia high school record for most r e g u l a r season victories in a row. McCOY HIMSELF has a streak of 55 regular season games at Winfield which his teams have won. "1 feel fortunate to be able to work with kids like these." said the h u s k y McCoy, a standout center for Charleston High and Morris Harvey College in his playing days. " The Winfield coach called Brad Hodges (215 pounds) "one of the better tackles in the area. Our guards. David Payne (185) and Steve Wilkinson (185), are as good a pair as we've ever had here. "Buster Sovine (109) is solid at right tackle. Our center, Bob Cobb (2101, moved here from Sibsonville and he should really help us. Dana Buckley U90'and Mark Williams (195) are solid ends. Yes. I think our line is well set,'' McCoy added. THE GENERALS lost their top running back, Billy Coffman, by graduation. ""John Taylor la 165-pound senior halfback) should fill in for Coffman all right," McCoy believes. There are two Chapmans in the Winfield backfied. Senior Pat Chapman (155) is the quarterback and sophomore Norris Chapman (185) is the fullback. J. D. Ryder (a 175- pound senior) is the left half. Defensive starters include Bob Gobel (225) at defensive end, Scott Geyer (175) at middle guard, ferry Bannister (145) and Kenny Sandt (140) at half backs and Mike Foter (150) at safety. The Winfield team plays seven h o m e g a m e s t h i s season. The school has. spent $50,000 to improve its field and facilities and the stands can seat 5,000 fans.
