Spencer kicked off to start the second half and a Catholic player fumbled the ball. Both teams made serious attempts to recover, but the ball went out of bounds. Catholic's ball, said one official. Spencer's ball, said another. Both offensive teams went into a huddle. Both came out in the T-formation. But Spencer beat the Irish to the ball and had a quick snap, putting the play in motion. Catholic's T-formation defense stopped the play for no gain. Four Pioneers State Class AAA champion East Bank placed four players on the 1971 All-State offensive and defensive first teams, including tackle Clifford Perry and center Steve Hess of. offense, and tackle Gary Walker and safety Lester Weems on defense.
