The Herd On the morning of Nov. 15, 1970, Jack Lengyel picked up the paper at his home in Wooster, Ohio, and read about the plane crash at Huntington that virtually wiped out the Marshall University football squad and coaching staff. "I just had a limp feeling," .he recalled later. Now, a little less than two years after that dark Sunday, Lengyel is smack in the middle of the formidable task of rebuilding the Marshall football program. He got his chance at the job because he played varsity football under M! \V. athletic director Joe McMullen when the latter was head coach at Akron University. McMULLEN LIKED Lengyel personally and he respected his record as a football coach, particuarly at Wooster where he built the Ohio school into a championship winner in the Ohio Conference. It would be very hard not to like the 36-year-old Lengyel. He is friendly, intelligent and a born public relations man. He makes his assistants a v a i l a b l e t o r e p o r t e r s following ball games or during the week to answer questions about their specific areas of responsibility. Lengyel looks younger than he is is and he certainly doesn't look like a man with 15 years of coaching experience behind him. Besides his five years at Wooster, he also coached in the collegiate ranks at Akron, Heidelberg C o l l e g e a n d C o r n e l l University. He isn't a football-only addict. At various times he has coached track, swimming, wrestling, baseball and lacrosse. ONE OF LENGYEL'S hobbies is drawing cartoons. While at Corne'.l, he designed Christmas cards for the football staff, and one of his first acts at Marshall was to r e d e s i g n t h e f o o t b a l l headgear. Lengyel looks very much like Jim Ca'rlen. former West Virginia University head grid coach now at Texas Tech. Athletes le Tn e Lengyels have three Christian children, including two sons and a daughter.
