Putnam Football -August24, Buffalo Putnam and Hurricane will be trying to recover from a heavy graduation. Poca will build around its defense, and Winfield needs a quarterback. That's the outlook for the four Putnam County teams as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. Baffo/o Putnam Coaches COACH: Harold Erwin (fourth year. 15-15) 1J74 RECORD: -2 TOP RETURNEES: Jackie Envin (T. Sr. 6-4. 225). Johnny Stone (QB. Sr. 6-1. 175). Steve Browning (HB Sr.. 5-7. 150). Derek Casto (HB. Sr.. 5-8.145). Billy Whittington (E. Jr.. 6-2. 165). TOP PROSPECTS: Cliff Raybum (LB. Sr.. 5-8.165). Oliver Herdman iC. Jr.. 5-8. 165). Terry Workman (E. Jr.. 5-9.150). Allen Cremeans (G. So.. 5-8. 145). Donnie DON JENNINGS Ptx-a STEVE WHALEY Hurricane LEON MrCOY V infield HAROLD ERWIN Buffalo Hurricane By Paul Wallace Newman (T. So.. 6-2. 195). Raymond Bailes (HB. Jr.. 5-8. 150). OUTLOOK: With 17 of last year's 26 players graduated. Buffalo roach H;:niltl Erwin will be rebuilding in his fourth year at the helm for the Bisons. Buffalo rolled to the second best record (8-2) in the school's history last year with a stingy defense that allowed only about four points a game. The Bisons will build around 6-foot-4, 255-pound second team All-State Jackie Erwin. quarterback Johnny Stone and halfback Steve Browning. "We'll be hurting most on the offensive line." Erwin said. "Our strongest area should be in the backfield." BOBBY MASSEY EDDIE ABBOTT Slemp (HB, Jr.. 6-2, 180), Roger Massey (LB. So.. 6-2. 190). OUTLOOK: First-year head coach Steve Whaley will be without 26 seniors from last year's Hurricane squad. Whaley said the success of the Redskins depends on how well they fare against their first four opponents -- Point Pleasant, Nitro. Ravenswood. and Dunbar. "Those four teams are the strongest on our schedule and if we make it through those in good shape, we could have a pretty good year." Rusty Sovine. the Redskins' 6-foot-2, 190-pound quarterback, will carry the brunt of the attack. "He's a good all-around player. He thinks well and throws well." Whaley said.' Carl Meadows (T, Sr.. 6-0.205). John Whittington (HB. So.. 5-10.160). Gary Sigmon (QB. So., 5-6. 135). OUTLOOK: Poca will rely on its defense and what coach Don Jennings terms a strong group of sophomores. The Dots have many experienced defensive players returning. They will build their defense around All-State safety Mike Gatens, who has been moved to corner- back and will probably see some action as quarterback. "The quarterback spot is up for grabs." Jennings said. "Gatens will be right in there, along with Gary Sigmon, Greg Arthur and possibly Randy Sayre." Also returning on defense are Frank Workman, a bruising 6-foot. 200-pound linebacker, end Albert Fowler, noseman Richard Thomas and halfback Eddie McVay. The sophomores Jennings expects to help include Rick Gibson, Rusty Arthur. What can you do when you want extra money?
