Hoover Tackle HOOVER REBUILDING Cowley's Greenest Team The graduation of 23 seniors from a superb 1974 team has left Herbert Hoover coach Joe Cowley without a returning regular. "Not one returning regular," he em- · phasizes. "This is the least amount of experience I've had in the last three years." The Huskies will present only 12 lettermen but perhaps will be spurred by an important intangible. Cowley calls it a winding attitude. * "We've had some success the past three ·~years and we hope there'll be some car- :"ryover." he says. "We worked pretty hard ·'Jon that the past few years" ^ In their first two seasons under Cowley. I-the Huskies were below .500 but have im'.proved in each of the past three years. Vhaving finished 7-3 in 1972. 8-2 in 1973 and "-9-1 last year for a school record. I A loss to South Charleston last year cost ^-them a possible berth in the Class AAA ··-playoffs. -I As Cowley begins rebuilding, he talks ^approvingly of his sophomores and says *-he's anticipating a good year defensively. By Mike Whiteford But the offense, he says, "needs a lol of work." "Our backs must prove themselves and our blocking is questionable," he indicates. "But we have a really good group of sophomores and they should help us after they get three or four games of experience." A tentative offense for Herbert Hoover shows Rick Fizer at quarterback. Tim Tanner at fullback, Gary Crede and Jeff Harper at halfbacks, Greg Schoolcraft at center, Dave Woods and Mike Shaffer at guards, Gilbert Burdette, Kevin Buckner and Jeff Holbrook at tackles and Tim Shamblin and Dale Wingate at ends. "We'll be throwing the ball more than last year," says Cowley, adding that quarterback Fizer and end Wingate should form a creditable passing combination. Last year, the ground-oriented Huskies averaged about five passes per game. A tentative defense shows Wendell Archer and Harper at halfbacks, Tony Merrifield and Shamblin at safeties. Buckner, Mike Morris and Sid Barnette at linebackers. Mike Shaffer and Tom Armstrong at ends, Burdette and Holbrook at tackles and Keith Carte at middle guard.
