Great Losses at DuPont But Bossie Isn't Glum Last season Tom Bessie's DuPont Panthers scored 277 points against 10 opponents. That total was more points than any DuPont team had ever recorded in a single season. The record the 71 .Panthers broke dated back to 1933. Considering Bossie lost both tackes. one end. three backs and had to shift a guard to another position you'd think football fortunes 'at DuPont look bieak. Bossie doesn't think so. however. "I'm not saying that we're going to score more points than we did last season." he said. "But I'm not saying it's impossible either." To repair the backfield d e f i c i t Bossie moved Bob C a s e b o l t f r o m g u a r d t o fullback. Last season as a sophomore Casebolt was All- KVC. "We've had to move Casebolt to a running back.' 1 he said. "I hated to sacrifice his ability on the offensive line because he's really a good one. I think he's a college prospect in the line, but he's the kind of kid you can play anywhere. He's'agile. . .he can play any position on the team." * * « BOSSIE also shifted senior defensive back Buddy Smith to offense. The other b'ackf ieid vacancy will be occupied by sophomore Greg Buster. Busier was. the leading scorer among Kanawha County Junior High football players last season. "Buster is untested." Bossie said. "We don't know what we can do. It's going to be a big j u m p from j u n i o r high to senior high football for him. Tom Bossie 16th Year At DuPont "Other than quarterback Danny Williams, the whole b a c k f i e l d is going to be green," he continued. Bossie is touting Williams as the f i n e s t q u a r t e r b a c k in the state. "We'll be r u n n i n g Casebolt as f u l l b a c k and probably senior Buddy Smith and Buster at the other spots. "So, actually our offensive backfield is our big question mark. I think our offensive line will be adequate even without Casebolt. Experience is what we need now. We have the kids to get the job done." RETURNING on offense are end Paul Watson, guard Jim J e f f r i e s , c e n t e r C h a r l e s Tucker and Williams. Bossie is in better shape on defense where seven regulars r e t u r n . A t t h e ends a r e Charles Smithers and Walton. Both tackles graduated, but a pair of Ohio transfers. Wetzel Bowe and Bennie Peltry, are expected to step in. Doug Newsome returns at one of two guard spots, while Casebolt and Junior Groom w i l l m a n t h e l i n e b a c k i n g posts. Gary Richardson and Smith will be the defensive backs with a vacancv existing at safetv. D I F O N T A T A G I . A N C K Coach: Tom Bossie 1971 Record: 6-2-1 1972 Outlook: Holes must be filled on the offensive line while green backfield must come through. In Danny Williams DuPont has one of the finest quarterbacks in the state Defense whould be stronger than the offense. 1972 Schedule 1971 Score H. Herbert Hoover 2 9-l2 A. So.
