Coach Bill Jarrett just laugh^. "Shoot, I'd be satisfied with being in the top four or five in the Kanawha Valley this year," said Jarrett of the ranking given his team by 'Compu-Prep Scene' football magazine. "Things are going to be pretty stacked up in the KVC and it'll be a big job for us to stay near the top in that. "You know what I thought when I heard about that magazine?" chuckled the Generals' coach. "Well, I compared that ranking to those tabloids you see in the grocery store and those movie magazines. None of 'em know what they're talking about. "There's no way in the world they could know who we've got back or who didn't come out or who flunked out or anything." But what about a more important question: Can Stonewall repeat as Class AAA state champion? "Well." drawled Jarrett, "I've seen years when it's looked better and I've seen years when it's been worse--lots worse. Heck, we don't have that many people back. I can't see why everybody says we're going to be so strong." Coming back are just seven starters- four from offense and three from defense--that helped Stonewall roll to 12 straight victories last season. Causing Jarrelt the most worry is finding replacements for eight players on defense, five of whom received some all- state mention last year. Defensive tackle Jim Mullins and linebackers Mike Shinn and Sam Pritt are all that's left of what held opposing teams to an average of 4.3 points a game during the regular season. "The defensive line doesn't worry me half as much as the secondary does," says Jarrett. "You just don't go out overnight and replace guys like Tim Johnson and Ron Henderson. Stonewall will be looking for seven newcomers to join running backs Walter Easley and Chuck Overstreet, quarterback John Bledsoe.and tackle Mall Gaines on offense. .'"We : re going to have a lot of new faces," Jarrett said. "We're going to be short in depth and short in size compared to what we had last year--but of course that was an exceptional year." The exceptional returnee from that exceptional year is Easley, the 6-2,200-pound tailback. Easley, now a senior, scored 74 points last season and was a leader for the Generals both on. and off the field. "We're going to be depending on Walter again, both as a runner and as a leader,' Jarrett said. "Anytime you've got horses like Easley and Overstreet, you've got to run with them. Right now any back-ups would be very inexperienced. "Overall, we're just not going to be as strong. We're going to have to do things a little differently. Instead of running over people, we'll have Bledsoe pass more. "This year here in the valley there are going to be a lot of good football teams. There's going to be better balance. We're going to have our hands full 'cause everyone's going to be looking for us." Getting back to that magazine though, there is one indication that they knew what they were talking about--the naming of Easley to the All-East team. "You ask if we can repeat," said Jarrett. "Hell. I didn't think we could do it last year. At times it looked like we never had any intentions of going all the way. So vou can't tell." Pre-lnventory PAINT SALE!
