Yellow Jackets Aim to Stay Off Bench Colin Cameron Fifth Year At W. Va. State State Defensive Stalwarts: .WcGreic, Summers, Long, Cosby and McComas Virtually every Yellow Jacket from West Virginia State College's 1971 football team is playing this season. That's an improvement right there. Last year, there were almost as many starters sitting on the bench--crutches nearby--as there were on the gridiron. After opening with two v i c t o r i e s , C o a c h C o l i n C a m e r o n ' s t e a m limped--literally--to a 2-8 record, averaging 14.8 points to its opponents' 25.7. Only the injury list, which Included about 10 cast cases, rose at a faster clip than the foes' points. "WE HAD ENOUGH injuries to make up for three seasons," said the fifth-year coach who owns a 20-18 record. "Barring injuries, we'll be better than last year's team." Eighteen lettermen-12 of t h e m r e t u r n i n g r e g u l a r s -- f o r m w h a t Cameron considers a strong nucleus. Only graduation losses were State's all-time rushing leader, Eddie Lee, who was sidelined after midseason because of injuries, defensive back Ron Walker, end Ron Saunders and defensive back Ralph Hill. Six regulars return on defense: ends Bill Ondra (6-5, 225, soph.) and Mike Rodes (62, 205, s r . ) , tackle John McComas (6, 250, jr.), guard- tackle Greg McGrew (5-10, 232. j r . ) , safety Bob Lewis (59, 165, j r . ) and All State Conference linebacker Jack Summers (5-11, 210, sr.), Two others who became regulars when injuries struck also return: linebacker Oliver Cosby (5-7, 190, soph.) and cornerback Stan Sims (6,175, soph.). "Overall, the defensive unit pleases me," said Cameron, although pointing out that a couple key positions will be filled w i t h inexperienced gridders. "We've got to come up with a middle guard and we have a couple of secondary positions to fill. "I like our depth at end, but we need it at tackle and in the secondary." Four linemen, two quarterbacks who alternated last year and three fine running backs return to pace the offense. Anchoring the forward wall Is center John Valentine (6-1, 262, jr.). He is flanked by guards Lynn Dudley (6-3,185, sr.) and Mike Belcher (6, 206, jr.). Don Hicks (6, 210, jr.), a tackle injured in the first game last season, had a good spring. CAMERON EXPECTS good competition for the other tackle position, tight end and split end. Versatile Larry Watkins (511,175, jr.) and Rod Smith (59, 155, soph.) share the quarterhacking. "Watkins has the nod right now," Cameron said. "Smith suffered a sore arm last year and couldn't t h r o w de'ep, b u t looked stronger in spring practice." Fred Venson (5-10, 165, jr.) led the rushing last year with 683 yards and shares the ball- toting chores with Herb Harris (5-8, 180, sr.), a third- year regular. Eddie Reeves (5-4, 155, soph.) and Vince Chapman (6-2, 200, soph.) will see action as running backs and receivers. W. VA.
