--August 24,1975 »·! Virgin* * tTJ \*mt* »\^M Marshall Opening Foe For Three Opponents '· GREG KOKAL Kent QB Ellwood No. 20 ; Frank Ellwood is Marshall University's 20th football coach. The Thundering Herd's winningest coach was Cam Henderson (1935-49). who won 68 games. For openers. Marshall University's football team has 10 rank as one of the favorites anyplace in the Midwest. Most teams have one opening game. .. but this season the Thundering Herd will have three. It all starts at the relatively early date of Sept. 6 when Marshall begins its season at the University of Akron. Then the Herd has two more openers... The following week (Sept. 13) Marshall helps Miami of Ohio open its campaign with an afternoon game at Oxford. .. then on Sept. 20. Morehead State begins its season with MU's first home game. What it all amounts to is that Miami and Morehead will have a chance to look at Marshall before playing the Herd. "I've never been through anything like it in my coaching career." said Coach Frank Ellwood. "Of course, there's a couple of ways to look at opening the season for three teams. One is that the opposition will have a chance to scout you. The other is that we'll have a game or two under our belt while Miami or Morehead won't have played a game. "I think the schedule overall is going to be fairly representative and fairly difficult. With some of the additions we've made, it's going to be an interesting one for our fans to watch." Four new teams are on the slate: Villanova. Central Michigan. Illinois State and McNeese State (of Louisiana). Three night games at Fairfield Stadium are scheduled with Morehead State, Illinois State and McNeese, plus there's the season-opening night game at Akron. Special dates include the Ml) homecoming on Oct. 25 against Western Michigan, and "Band Night" for the Sept. 27 Illinois State contest.
