,1975 Sunden - STATE VETS: Tyrone Monce, Bill Epl ing, Aaron Jones, Jeff Sokolik 'Good Kids Coming Back' With a list of 22 returning starters, West Virginia State coach Colin Cameron should be biting at the bit waiting for the football season to open. But. Cameron is being a little cautious. Last year's 1-8 record was nothing to write home about. "We're going to improve over last year, but that's not too hard to dp," Cameron said. "We do have the makings of a fine team, but our kids are going to have to come back with the same type of attitude they had last year." The only regulars lost at State were offensive tackle John Valentine and defensive rover back Steve Swayne. Everyone else is back, and, for the first time since Cameron has been coach, it looks like the Yellow Jackets will have depth. "We're bringing in 26 freshmen," Cameron said. "We have 49 returning players, so that gives us a 75-man roster. That's the most we've had since I've been here." Cameron is hoping for the same attitude from his players that they had last year, despite a miserable season. "We have good kids coming back. They had good hustle and good spirit last year," he said. "Our kids fought all season and that's the thing that makes me optimistic." Heading the list of returning regulars is quarterback Jim Charley. "He's not big as far as size goes and he's not a flashy runner. He's just a steady ball player who gets the job done for you week in and week out. He's a good passer and a good runner," Cameron said. For the passing game, Charley has his favorite target in Warren Anderson, wide receiver. "If we can get the ball to Anderson, there are not too many people that can stay with him one-on-one. He'll give us more variety in our offense because teams-will have to keep one eye glued on him at all times," the State coach said. Another excellent pass receiver is tight end Bill Potter. "He's grown since last year. He's hard to bring down when he catches the ball and he's also a very good blocker," Cameron explained. The backfield is already set with Wayne Holland at fullback and Clint Barlow and Jeff Good at halfbacks. Holland will be counted on for those^ tough yards up the middle while Barlow will rely on his speed. Good is considered an excellent pass receiver in addition to his running ability. Across the offensive line Cameron welcomes back center Bill Ebling, guards Jeff Spurlock and Lou Robinson and tackle Bruce Rupert. Defensively, Cameron has Dwight Reed at middle guard, Henry Mouzon and Darvin Poole at tackles, Marshall Burger and George Tuttle at ends. Larry Stovall, who started two years ago, but didn't play last year, is also returning at defensive end. Jim Abshire and Harold Headlee head the linebacker corps. The defensive secondary is like a team within a team. Cameron has a list of six players to choose from including Alvin Graves, Ronnie Montgomery, Jim Alcorn, Danny Watson, Ray Davidson and Herb French. State's kicking game appears sound. Jeff Spurlock, who holds the school record with a 42-yard field goal, Dennis Strubel and freshman Mike Cherry are all capable.
