Finds Good Source for Pot UNITED NATIONS (AP)-The United Nations has found a reliable source of marijuana cigarettes--the University of Mississippi. It's in the interest of science. A report on a new U.N..-sponsored research project into "The Chemistry of Cannabis Smoke" said one of the problems was finding joints of uniform content. There was so much variation that it was "limiting the usefulness of comparing the results achieved by various research cen- Rhinoceros Declared An Endangered Species NAIROBI. Coordinators of the project at the U.N. narcotics laboratory in Geneva asked the U.S. National Institute of Drug Abuse to help and it contacted Ole Miss. "To insure continuity of research efforts, fresh cigarettes are being prepared from a batch of well-characterized, uniform plant material grown by the research institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. School of Pharmacy, University of Mississippi," they reported. The research is in the very early stages. Another problem in applying scientific . method to the project, the report said, is the large variety of ways people prepare and smoke their marijuana--"and the way of smoking may influence the chemical pattern of smoke and subsequent biological effects of smoking." It noted that some smokers roll their own and that many pass their joints around. "The butt of the cannabis cigarette may be held on an ad hoc device--for example matches or hairpins to smoke the cigarette completely," the report said Until apparatus is developed to simulate pot smoking, it was recommended that the researchers standardize on the smoking machines now used by the tobacco industry. The project was launched at ; a meeting of scientists from nine countries and the World Health Organization in Athens. Greece, last April. H o C h i M i n h F i l m Finished by N. BOSTON (AP) - Medical researchers here say they have developed a new antiserum for one type of hepatitis, a severe and a sometimes fatal liver disorder. The drug was tested in 15 hospitals on 800 medical workers who accidentally exposed themselves to infection by pricking themselves with contaminated hypodermic needles or other means, according to Dr. George F. Grady, associated professor at Tufts Medical School. * * * GRADY SAID A LARGE number of those workers would normally be expected to contract Type B hepatitis, even with the traditional treatment to prevent the disease -- an injection of gamma globulin. But after injection.of the new antiserum. only 50 of the 800 -- 6V.i per cent -came down with hepatitis, Grady said. He said the workers were divided into three groups. One group received a high dosage of the new drug, one received a medium dosage and the third a low dosage. Of those injected with a low dosage, 7 per cent got the disease, while 5 per cent on the medium dosage and 2-per cent on the high dosage got hepatitis, he said. Gamma globulin, a blood component which contains a variety of antibodies, administered to prevent hepatitis can often cause the disease, Grady said. He said the new anliserum can also result in infection., but less frequently than gamma globulin. A study by Dr. Alfred M. Prince of the New York Blood Center showed that 25 per cent of persons without hepatitis got it after receiving injections of gamma globulin and 7.9 per cent got the disease after injections of the new drug, Grady said in an interview. The new antiserum is a mixture of antibodies from the blood of people who have been exposed to the virus. Grady said about one in 10 people carries the antibodies, but only one in a thousand has them in a concentration high enough for use in the antiserum. Grady said another New York Blood Center study showed that the antiserum is more effective in protecting against hepatitis when injected prior to exposure. * * * THAT PROJECT INVOLVED 614 patients and medical personnel in 30 artificial kidney centers across the country. The risk also is high among people who get frequent blood transfusions, and the disease is an occupational hazard of doctors, nurses and other health care personnel exposed to victims and to needles contaminated with the virus. Hepatitis is believed to afflict 500.000 to one million Americans each year, causing about 7,000 deaths. There are basically two types of hepatitis, Type A and Type B. Type A is less severe and is most likely to strike children. The studies of the antiserum were presented last month at a meeting in Helsinki of the International Society of Blood Transfusion. They have been submitted for publication in the New England Journal of Medicine. Soviets Again Riddle China With Press MOSCOW (AP) - The Soviet Union is stepping up its warnings that'world peace is being increasingly threatened by China's alleged preparation for war and its struggle against detente. The latest warning came in an article in Kommunist, the theoretical journal of the Communist party's central committee. "Attempts of the Chinese leaders to frustrate relaxation of international tension and to worsen the world situation are increasing," Kommunist said. 'The course for the preparation of war has been fixed in the manuals of the Communist party ..and the new constitution. That is why Maoism carries a danger for people of all states, independent of their social system:" The Kommunist article was only the latest, volley, although "the most authoritative, in a stepped-up war of words against China, which seemed to increase in fervor after the Communist victory in Indochina last spring. In dozens of recent articles.in the press, , the Soviets have, concentrated their attacks on Chinese opposition to the Euro. pean peace and security agreement and to .. Peking;s intentions in Southeast Asia.
