·E 4u£ust24, 1975 Sundae_,,_! ? - Ctartesfc* A«J Vir»ai« ^^^ There's No Witch Like One Next Door BOGOTA. Colombia AP - People in Bogota who don't believe in witchcraft are keeping quiet about it this week. Hundreds of witches are converging on the city for their first international conference, and the streets are filled with Haitian voodoo dancers, skilled practitioners of the Brazilian candomble, wild performers of the Venezuelan marialionza and on down through palm-reading gypsies. With the witches come the experts in the occult, ranging from respected psychiatrists to mind readers and self-styled parapsychologists. In all, some 2,000 participants are expected at the conference, which begins Monday. Five Ecuadoran witches who left their brooms behind arrived here with profound regrets. Their small plane suddenly shed an engine in midair, and the pilot required all his skills -- and perhaps some supernatural help -- to bring the craft in safely. $xvm88^^ *C£NTRAL EMPLOYMENT* ASST. Mclaughlin, a Jesuit priest and former White House adviser to Richard M. Nixon, was married Saturday in a civil ceremony to a woman who helped him run his unsuccessful Senate campaign in 1970. McLaughJin, 48, was married to Anne Dore by Chief Judge Gerard D. Reilly of. the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Reilly said the brief cermony in his chamber was attended by relatives and family friends. The wedding plans were kept a secret except from a small circle of close friends and relations. + + » ONE FRIEND of the couple said McLaughlin had been absolved of his religious vows by Pope Paul VI in order to marry Mrs. Dore, a divorcee. Reilly said the couple hopes to receive permission to be wed in a Roman Catholic ceremony f ter Mrs. Dore's previous marriage is annulled. McLaughlin, a staunch defender of Nixon during the President's last days in office,'served as a speechwriter and adviser in the White House for more than three years. He left his $32,000 to $34,000-a-year job ' Oct. 15, 1974, and began making public speaking appearances after his Jesuit superior in Boston ordered him to quit the White House job. Bicentennial Status Given Potomac State His bride, in her early 30s, helped McLaughlin run his unsuccessful 1970 campaign as the Republican challenger to Sen. John 0. Pastore, D-R.I. She also has worked in public relations in Washington and now is employed by a private firm here, friends said. "They've known each other for a long time," said Mrs. John Slocum, a prominent Rhode Island Republican who ar-; ranged a wedding luncheon for the couple at an Georgetown club. Mrs. Slocum, of Newport, said that former White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan hosted a wedding party Friday night for the couple and about 25 others persons. Mrs. Slocum said the couple purposely kept their wedding plans secret. "They probably thought it was more romantic," she said. Mrs. Slocum said the Mclaughlins plan to honeymoon overseas. Soviet Spy Ship Saves Four U.S. Fishermen NORFOLK, Va. )ap) -- Four fishermen whose boat stalled and began leaking in the Atlantic some 40 miles off the Virginia coast were rescued and turned over to a U.S. Navy vessel by a Russian spy ship, the Navy said Saturday. The trawler Zaporozye towed the fishermen's 21-foot boat for 2Vz hours Friday before spotting the Navy combat support ship Seattle'. The trawler signaled the Seattle it had Americans in tow and cast off its line about a half-mile from the American ship. The fishermen were flown here Saturday. They were identified as Charles M. Bain, 24, Casey Robinson, 18, Bill Rizy, 27, and Gary Reich, 19, all of nearby Virginia Beach. 460-560: Holiday Death Prediction CHICAGO (AP)-The National Safety Council estimated Saturday that between 460 and 560 persons will die in traffic accidents during the four-day Labor .Day- weekend. "They went out of their way to help us." * * * THE BILGE PUMP on the fishermen's boat malfunctioned about 10 a.m. Friday and they drifted until about 3 p.m. when the boat's anchor hung up on a shoal. "We could see ships on the horizon, but they didn't see us," Robinson said. Finally the men flagged down a white vessel they believed to be a Coast Guard cutter. "I couldn't read the name on the ship," Robinson said. "I thought it might be Japanese or Chinese. Then as it got closer I saw the two stars and though, 'Oh, my God." "I was standing on the rear of the boat ready to dive in at the first sight of a rifle." Bain said. "I was scared," said Reich. "I didn't know what would happen to us." The men said the Russians were hesitant about helping at first. "They asked us all sort of questions," Reich said. "We handed them our fishing poles and other gear to prove we were really fishermen." * * THE FOUR SAID it took the Russians about 45 minutes to decide to take them in tow. "They said they were going to go fishing, too." Bain said, "and then they laughed. They said they were going to Cuba." Rizy said that he asked if they could board the Russian ship, but was refused permission. "I think I could nave learned something if I had gotten on board." said Rizy, who was an electronics technician in the Navy. "They asked if any of us had been hi the Navy." he said.
