Prices took a v i r t u a l l y straight downhill path through the first four trading days of the week, with the market's attention riveted on inflation and its potential impact on the economy's efforts to mount a sustained recovery from the recession. On Tuesday Sidney L. Jones, assistant Treasury secretary for economic policy, warned of the likelihood of a 'turbulent period" for the economy in the next few months. Investors at the same time off 16.3 were bracing for the bad news that came Thursday morning in the government's report on its consumer price index for July. ·The price barometer, as it turned out, climbed at a 14.4 per cent annual rate during the month for its sharpest rise since last September. 61.2 46.7 36.0 30.4 26.7 25.0 25.0 23.5 22.4 22.2 22.2 20.9 20.6 20.0 20.0 19.6 19.5 19.0 18.8 18.8 18.2 17.9 17.6 17.6 Chg. -l'/B Last 31V4 10'A 45'A 15'A 233/4 33% 33% 54 47'A 443A 17 IBVa 19'/4 17% -IVe 13ft 933/4 -ll'A 91 -2% 56'A -3'/e 223A + ft 7% -1 -2 + to - Vz -Ito -3% -7'A -2'A - 3/4 - '/a Weekly Number of Tradtd luvti N.Y, Stocks 1,999 N.ENDS Va,%American Stocks American Bonds 1,198 117 WMkly Amtx Dollar UMtn NEW YORK (AP)-The following is a list of (his week's most active stocks based on the dollar volume.
