Lombardy, Thornally Share U.S. Open Lead Mickey Rivers 'I Know When to Go' His 62 steals leads the majors, 10 ahead of National League leader Davey Lopes of Los Angeles. "This club doesn't have a 'steal 1 sign," said Rivers. "We have a 'don't steal' sign. That's because everybody on the club is fast." Manager Dick Williams says, "When they're left alone, they steal better." "Sure," adds Rivers. "With some clubs, you might get the steal sign and you look at the pitcher and you know it's not the right time. When I'm on my own, I know when to go." Credits Tommy Harper Rivers credits now-departed Tommy Harper with teaching him how to study pitchers' moves, how to get a big lead and how to do the little things with finesse. The tutoring has apparently done some good, because Mickey has more steals than he's ever had in a single season. He led the Pacific Coast League in stolen bases in 1973 with 47 and last year with the Angels had but 30. "In spring training, my goal was 40," he said, "But I was talking to Andy Hassler's mother and she told me I had to hit .300 and steal 80. Well, I'm trying." Rivers said he likes to steal more against left-handed pitchers, "because they're looking right at you and they're thinking, 'He's not going to steal,' so they get complacent." Can Take Bluer Leads Rivers said stealing bases is so easy that he doesn't know what he can do. "Really, I'm still learning the pitchers. I know I can take bigger leads and 1 know I can surprise a few pitchers that think they can get me out. Last year I just made up my mind that I could steal." The Angels are closing in on 200 stolen bases for 1975. The American League team record is 288 set by Washington in 1913. Williams hopes the Angels break it because it would be good for attendance. Rivers hopes the Angels get it "because when everybody else is running well, it helps me. Like, if we have a man at third and I'm at first, it's a lot easier for me to run if they think the other guy can steal home." t Computer Programming · wwiupwi vi r i w^ji v ««5j r- EVERYONE'S COMING BARGAINS BY THE WE BOUGHT BIG SO YOU COULD «T*VE MOftE! fOM COHHCTl HOHC UHTH FOU XITCHIHS. . nUHIHK, ILKTHCH. The August rating lists names him as an American master with 2309 points. This year's open is being played in Lincoln, Neb.
