Ouestion Box Bewildered eavesdropper hears Stephanie and Norman discuss sex on "Not Now, Norman* 1 11:30 p.m., Vi ednesdav, ABC. Networks slug it out for fall · '"·.,--""" C? By Jerry Buck Aanofiuletl Prest Writer LOS ANGELES -(AP)Head to head and toe to toe, the three television networks will slug it out for strength this fall. Unlike last year, when they struggled into a fall season crippled by a 16-week writers' strike, all three networks have strong schedules. Despite the momentum CBS carries into the fall because of this past season's runaway ratings victory, all- three networks appear more evenly matched than in recent months. Family life-will be the " dominant theme in the new season's shows. The heavy . concentration, pf-police shows is coming to-an :end; Six new shows follow in the path of "The" Walton's," while only five of the new Aeries are police shows. Most of the comedies-and several of the new dramatic arid adventure shows "will be^ marked by an ejmphasis dn warm relationships and character development. - · · - - - '"'· *· · · - · ' . . · · · ' ··"- Even-tHe police show"McMillan and; Wife" is going the family way. .The McMillans will be blessed- with a child at about midsea- son, due to the pfegnaticy o f : Rock Hudson's cstar Susan St. James: In addition; an especially strong' lineup' of specials, original TV movies and recent hit theatrical movies are in the offing. In the p:;st few months, the networks have discarded 40 series, an unprecedented number of cancellations. Only five shows introduced last fall - "KojakV "Apple's Way," "Happy Days," "Good Times" and "The $6 Million Man," are returning. The new shows last fall were shot through with weaknesses, partly attributable to the writers" strike. SHOK TIME, June 30,1974 This is not the case for fall. A preview of the new series reveals strong in concept, writing and casting. . The only cloud on the horizon is the possibility of actors' strike. The Screen Actors Guild is now in negotiation with the producers for a new contract.'The present contract expires tonight. - Next fall; only a handful of the returning'snbws will be in their familiar time slots. Hit shows are being shifted to strengthen weak spots and provide support for the new shows: For instance,. CB.S is · moving ".Good Times;" M~A-S-H".and "Kojak" to Sunday, which-traditionally has been "CBS's weakest night. "Apple's ;Way" opens the night for CBS and "Mannix" closes it " '~ -.." . ABC, knocked dead on Saturday night by the -0dy blocks moves "Baing: Fu" in" at 9 i?cloc;k between ·-· two heW'-shows^'fite New . Ontkean was dropped when he held out for a higher salary. Following "Gunsmoke," CBS hopes to draw viewers" away from NBC's movies and ABC's NFL football with; "Maude" and "Rhoda." Valerie Harper stars in "Rhoda," a spinoff from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show/' In a one-hour episode early in the season she will get married.'. NBC pits its new 90-minute movies against the ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week^Tihats^putting strength against strengths · andiitmay deperid^oniwliethi- : : er ABC's "Happy Days" of NBC's "Adam-12" provides the better lead-in. Another factor is the audience CBS's "Planet of the Apes 1 ' and "Hawaii Five-CT might draw away. . " ' " Wednesday is virtually a new night for everybody. Only the ABC Movie of the Week and CBS's "Cannon" remain. NBC looks strong -,.with "Little House on the. Prairie" starring Michael Landon, "Lucas Tanner" with David Hartman and "Petrocelli" with Barry Newman. CBS has "Senior Year," a teen-age drama set in the 1950s, "Cannonn" and "Manhunter," a 1930s detective show with Ken Howard. ABC has "That's My Mama," a black family comedy, the movie and "Get Christie Love," with Teresa Graves as a black detective. NBC takes on the powerful "Waltons" with a new Jack , Webb production, "The Rangers," based on the U.S. . Forest Service. It's "Emergency!" with scenery, and NBC believes it will hold its own against "The Waltons" as "Emer- -gency!" has-against "All in the Family." ABC takes a different tack ...with two comedies, "Ev- -erything .Money Can't Buy" and "Paper Moon.;' The first is a.variation of "The Millionaire" with an angel who grants one wish a week. The second is from the mov- -.-· ie about a con man and his 11-year-old girl companion. Friday has a little bit of everything and the viewer can take his choice: There's . adventure, comedy^ a family drama, a police show and the supernatural. Ron Howard is costarred in the film, "The Spikes Gang," with Lee Marvin. Q. - Is Michael Cole joining the cast of "The Rookies" next season? I like Cole and always enjoyed him in "The Mod Squad," but I hope his joining "The Rookies" doesn't mean Michael Ontkean or Sam Melville will be leaving or relegated to smaller roles. -- D.C., White Plains, N.Y. A. -- You have been misinformed. . .Michael Cole is not becoming one of "The Rookies." » Q. -- If I get a group of people to sign a letter protesting the cancelation of "The Magician" and send it to NBC, do you think the show will be reinstated? I heard this worked in some other cases. - P.C., Wichita, Kans. A. -- Fans' rallying 'round their favorite series has had some effect in the past, but it's really too late to revive "The Magician." The show has been canceled, and the new season's schedule is firm. Q. -- Natalie Wood is gorgeous. Her recent TV movie, "The Affair," with her husband, Robert Wagner, was nice and she looked as beautiful as always. A girl.* friend of mine told me Natalie has had extensive plastic surgery done to her face. Is this so?-K.S., Toledo, Ohio A. -- Natalie Wood has been in films since she was a tiny tot and her looks have always been the same . . . .she gave an indication during her teenaged years that she was going to be one of Hollywood's true beau-.,, ties, and she has certainly lived up to that promise.
