Disc-cussion Perhaps RCA felt Miss Steber wouldn't sell without a gimmick. Or possibly the recording company just took advantage of the human fascination for seeing their heroes and heroines in hopeless absurd situations. If either were the case, RCA succceeded. However, if company brass even remotely believed this recording might appeal to the sort of opera nut who likes to kick off his shoes, pour a drink, and let his, music wipe away every- · thing that's ugly, they could be headed for serious trouble- It's not so much that she's singing at a public bath. It really doesn't matter much where she sings. And it isn't that she appeared with a towel hanging f r o m her This Week At Sunrise ^'Charleston's center of arts and education's "open to the public free Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. Planetarium "Voyagelb the Planets" 3 p.m. Sunday, June 30; "Summer Stars," 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, 3 p.m. Saturday. You can-close your eyes and imagine what you will. But you can't close your eyes to Miss Stebers incessant babbling. Producers of the release give the buyer a glimpse of things to come by including on the album jacket remarks to the effect that arias will be interspersed with "impromptu remarks by the artiste." · Were it not for the disruptive chatter, the program would. have been pleasant. Miss Steber begins with Mozart and Charpentier, moves on to Puccini arid Mas- senet, and. includes arias from Sieczynski, Fields- Kreisler and Ross-Lahar. The latter are from popular, as opposed to operatic, repertory. If you sing in the bath, don't take opera seriously, and have always imagined in your mind's eye an operatic diva draped in a black towel, you'll probably enjoy the .recording. -L... "' '" WITNESS -- Spooky Tootk (Inland, distributed by Capitol, SW-9337) This English rock band has moved to the Colonies, laying claim now to being an American band, this is their, first album since, the move, and it's very good. There's an extended version of the single, "All Sewn Up," that shows the band can play light rock with.the best bubblegummers. The rest of the album, while light, shows the band in its more familiar stance. Best cuts include "Wings on My Heart," "Ocean of Power," "Tilings Change" and "Pyramids." - . - " , .
