Robert F. Kennedy said Saturday he was "shocked but not surprised" by the revelation that Los Angeles police have destroyed some of the evidence in the case. "If we wait any longer in reopening the assassination investigation other . . . material may no longer be available," Allard K. Lowenstein, former Democratic congressman ffom New York, said at a press conference here. Lowenstein added that previous statements by police that they would not release certain pieces of physical evidence because they wanted to protect the privacy of innocent persons involved in the inquiry now appear to "have been misleading or deceptive." Late last week, Los Angeles police disclosed that officers destroyed bullet-riddled ceiling panels and other evidence they considered useless in the assassination case. Officials also said all evidence actually used in.the conviction of Sirhan B. Sirhan remains intact and in safe hands. Critics of the investigation into the 1968 assassinatipn have claimed that examination of the ceiling panels would have been crucial in determining whether Sirhan acted alone. According to Lowenstein, the revolver used by Sirhan. contained eight bullets, seven of which were recovered. Examination of the ceiling panels, which police said contained three bullet holes, would show whether more than eight shots were fired, thereby demonstrating whether a second assassin was involved,. Lowestein said. Lowenstein said he would continue to press for the release of other pieces of physical evidence, including a door jamb in which a bullet reportedly lodged. Since police have contended that the eighth bullet was lost in the space above the ceiling panels, Lowenstein explained, the discovery of a ninth bullet in the door jamb would also demonstrate the presence of a second gun. A judge in Los Angeles recently responded to motions made by critics of the investigation by ordering a retesting of the Sirhan gun. Lowenstein released a list of ballistics tests he wanted performed on the Sirhan gun in order to determine if it in fact was the murder weapon. Junior High To Register New Students Registration of new students at Dunbar Junior High School will be held Monday through Friday of this week, according to counselor Billie Davis. Students who moved into the school attendance area during the summer should enroll in the counselor's office between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. during this period. They should bring a report card from the school they attended last year. Other students will find home room assignments listed on the windows of the cafeteria beginning Tuesday. - Il'S going to take a lot of paint - 66,000 pounds - and a lot of time - three months - for this roller coaster in a Charlotte, N.C., park to be given a fresh coat.
