Residents of the Dry Ridge community near St. Albans have spent a lot of time aol effort the past two years cleaning up litter along their road. They wish they could keep it clean. Unfortunately, people from outlying areas keep dumping refuse along Dry Ridge, despite two "no dumping" signs and one "violators will be prosecuted" sign. "I just don't know how people can continue to dump trash along the road, particu- larly after we have cleaned it up and installed signs." Mrs. Whettterholt said the Drv Ridge residents have received great cooperation from conservation officers Terry Dunn and Bill Collins of tke State Department of Natural Resources, and from the State Department of Highways (SDH). * » * THE OFFICERS have ob- This road used to look like a dump pile," said Mrs. Whetherhoit. "so two years ago we began a deanup campaign, aad we removed 1Q tnwkloads of refuse, including one place that looked like a city dump. This year we put on another cleanup drive.'* ·j'Much of the continuing aumping takes place at night, Mrs. Whetherhoit pointed out. Metfcsna WASHINGTON (AP-A crusty old cattleman OEUBY years ago spoke at a barbecue which featured a steer he had donated to the gathering. He described ia great detail how he had raised the animal from infancy. The man, a respected Kansas producer had seen it all. The ups and downs of the cattle business, drought, grasshoppers, depression prices and massive liquidations of breeding herds. For perhaps II muutet he described with seeming enw- tioi--a touch of tears, perhaps--how he had assisted at the calf's birth aad watched its first ··steady steps ia the pasture. The animal, he said, was a woider to behold, a beantifnl product of a aature aad selective breeding. Then, with a faint smile, the cattleman looked tcward the steaming beef nearby and turned to his audience: "Now, let's eat the SOB." Regardless of how much that cattleman meant to convey about the romance of his business and the majesty of herds grazing peacefully in the Kansas Flint Hills, he summed up the entire business by ending with those words. * » * TODAY, AS livestock producers are caught in another bind--in some ways worse than drought--the message is being brought home even more firmly. The end product of ranches, farms, feedlots, poultry houses and dairy barns is put on the consumer's table. Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz, noted for blunt talk about farm economics, was saying a year or two ago that it was hard for a New York housewife to relate a pork chop at her supermarket with a hog in a muddy pen in Iowa. The point Buti was making involved the apparent lack of knowledge and appreciation city people have of farmers, what they produce and how they must have profits if consumers expect plenty of food to eat. If the triumphs and trials of agriculture the past couple of years have resulted in anything, it has been a much larger exposure of farmers to the public eye. It has dawned on many previously unaware people that when the corn crop in Iowa suffers it means problems for livestock producers. And problems for hog and cattle producers mean troubles at meat counters later on. «A.ceUence reference, nas oae* a »tuse- tocriMr tor J «a*v Septy to u M-J735 c o O»ris*»» KfetMajefi.
