Today's deal is a case in point. ' East-West would have had no problems making five spades and North-South was cold for 11 tricks in hearts, but South refused to let the opponents out bid him and ·eventually settled in a heart slam. If West had led a diamond or his singleton trump .South would have ended up a trick short but with a club lead the contract was ironclad. - South ruffed the ace of clubs lead and trumped a spade on the board. He continued by trumping another club, a spade, a third club and a third spade. At this point, declarer made a costly error. He entered his hand with the diamond ace and led his last spade. West trumped with the queen of hearts and cashed a diamond for down one. South should have gotten to his hand by trumping another club with the jack of hearts and then playing his remaining spade. West can trump in and lead a dia- .mond but declarer wins the ace and leads his seven of hearts to dummy's 10 picking up East's trump. Now the losing diamond 'is discarded on the good 10 of clubs for the 12lh trick. LAST WEEK'S WINNERS ·ftlDGETTECLUI '^.1 Mrs D. L. Graves ano Mrs. J. G. Mil;:-.I J Mae wethered am!
