'Buffalo Biir mixes politics, show business By James F. Dent "BUFFALO BILL AND THE INDIANS," Paul Newman, Joel Grey. Plaza East.** Roughly half of Buffalo Bill and The Indians is a-funny movie about one of America's first show business heroes. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , the other half is a murky, boring at- **mpt at sociology and myth debunking and it's not possible to separate the two halves cleanly so I can't say to you. Son, 75 sible for Nashville, is the producer of Buffalo Rill and there are those who profess to see similarities, in the two f i l m s since both are an amalgam of show business and politics. I can say. with no fear of contradiction, that if you disliked Ntuhville. you'll loathe Buffalo Bill. Altman adapted the picture from the Arthur Kopit play Indians. which was a polemical d r a m a about the white man's shabby treatment of the Indians as person- fied by Buffalo Bill's dealings with' Sitting Bull. Altman has. however drawn his whites too black and his reds too spotlessly white. The white men in Buffalo Bill are.'without exception, knaves, villains and fools and the Indians are the most noble of noble savages. The time of the movie is 1885 and the scene is the site of B u f f a l o Bill's Wild West Show encampment where the troupe is rehearsing for the next season's show. Sitting Bull has just been acquired, after negotiations with the Army, which was holding him prisoner, as a novelty attraction. But Sitting Bull is not happy with the way Buffalo Bill wants him to appear, which is as . the blood thirsty murderer of Gen. George Armstrong Custer. Sitting Bull counters with a plan to show a massacre of Indians by whites. Not on your life, says Buffalo Bill. "I have a better sense of history." . The acting in the film is good. Paul Newman is B u f f a l o B i l l , shown here as a v a i n , posturing drunk who lusts after opera singers and a place as a hero in history. Joel G r e y i s h i s p a r t n e r a n d co-producer, .a little man who uses big words and uses them wrong. Harvey Keitel is Bill's nephew whose job with the show is as his uncle's occasional whipping boy. Keitel has, by the way. one of the best lines in the movie only you have to connect it up. Irving Ber- lin's musical. Annie 6» Voiir dun. was about Buffalo Bill. One of the big song hits from that show was "There's No Business Like Show Business." And Keitel. at one point in the movie, shakes his head wqn- deringly and says. "There.is no business like the show business." Geraldine Chaplin is Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter: Burt Lancaster is Ned Buntlirie. the pulp fiction writer who created the Buffalo Bill legend: Frank Kaquitts is the s.ilent Sitting B u l l : "and W i l l Sampson, the huge I n d i a n ward- · mate of Jack Nicholson in One Ffeic Orrr The C.urkon'f .\est is William Question Box Q. Is Dustin Hoffman going to have a TV series next season? He's my favorite actor. Did he ever appear on TV? - Mrs. G. M., Bridgeport, Conn. A. Dustin Hoffman appeared on TV before he scored in films with The Graduate. He played small roles mostly, except for some heavy dramatic character acting, in productions on educational TV programs. He is not slated to star in a TV series of his own. Hoffman is busy in films. llalsey. Sitting Bull's interpreter." Two of the best and funniest performances in the mbvieiare turned in by Kevin McCarthy as the blustering publicity man who speaks in the grandiose, orotund bombast of his trade even when making casual conversation and .John Considine as Frank Butler. Annie Oakley's partner and lover who suffers in constant fear that she is going to shoot him during one of her tricks either accidentally or on purpose after learning of his other love affairs. Pat McCormick turns up to do a slapstick turn as President Gro"er Cleveland, a part obviously included only so Altman can take another jab ( t h i s one"e"ven more grossly overdrawn than the others i at the white establishment. As I said, about half the movie is entertaining and funny. I understand that Altman had to cut about 30 or 40 minutes from the film and that what he chose to cut. were a number of scenes showing-the. troupe performing. It would have been better to leave those in and cut the heavy handed Social Significance. Altman should have heeded the words of a former Hollywood producer: "If I want to send a message. I'll use Western Union." Color and scenery are excellent. OPEN SUNDAY 1-11 P.M.
