Some platters made to break over knees TASHI PLAYS MESSIAEN, "Quartet for the End of Time," RCA Red Seal, ARL1-1567. Stereo. Tashi is a quartet on a kick. Its ' members--Peter Serkin, Ida Kavafian. Fred Sherry and Richard Stoltzman--have elected to hide their immense talents as musicians in favor of pioneering this particular work in concert halls throughout America. · Tashi appeared here last season for the Charleston Chamber Music Society. This work was on the program. It is a ghastly, bizarre composition that makes the blood run cold. I loathed it then and I loathe it now. A previously printed review outlined my revulsion at the entire concept .of expression utilized in "Quartet for the End of Time." This recording does nothing to allay that disgust. The album's centerfold shows the quartet members clad in casual dress (only slightly more casual than what they wore here in formal concert), and lolling about in what appears to be wilderness. They are smirking as if they know something we don't. What they don't know is that I intend to break this record over my knee. I suggest you do the same. Martha Smith REX, Original Cast Recording, Disc-cussion RCA Red Seal, ABLM683, Stereo. Unquestionably one of the biggest turkeys to roost on Broadway in some time. Rex is the musical interpretation of the exploits of HenryVIII. The score by Richard Rodgers is sort of ponderous Camelot, with all the fanfare, but none of the whimsical charm. Here, instead, is Nicol Williamson as Henry, warbling away in 4/4 time, sounding horribly uncomfortable, especially on the high notes. A bargain counter tenor of very modest gift. Unlike fine wine, which grows more valuable with age. Richard Rodgers seems here to have lost his flair, his style. It is as though, after Oklahoma!, South Pacific, The Sound of Mutic and some 50 years of eloquent show music that he gave to the Broadway stage, Richard Rodgers is written out. Perhaps he has nothing more to say. or maybe the subject matter proved too great an obstacle. Whatever the reason, the great Rodgers could do worse than settle back to rest on his well-earned laurels. He remains king, despite Rex.
