WCHS isn't going to show "Phyllis,"- the new Cloris Leachman comedy that is a spin-off from the "Mary Tyler wopre Show." In the Monday night time slot that the network will use for "Phyllis" and another new halt hour called "Three For The Road," WCHS will show reruns of "Gunsmoke." There are no plans, at the moment, to show "Phyllis" at all although doubtless, if it becomes a-hit, WCHS will try to work it in somewhere, perhaps on Saturday afternoons. I think if I were CBS and WCHS came "whining to me, asking if it could show "Phyllis" at another time than the network offers it I would tell WCHS to go to. That's the reason, by the way, whenever promotions for "Phyllis" appear WCHS. scrambles to cut them off the air. They don't want you to know what you're going to be missing. Let me say that "Gunsmoke" was a fine series while it lasted and if WCHS wants to buy the syndicated reruns and program them in local time I would say they made a fine decision. But to chop off a couple of news shows in favor of repeats is a cheap shot, obviously reflecting WCHS's opinion of its audience. Sunday Solo While I'm on : the subject of WCHS and its shortcomings-a subject I sometimes I think I never seem to get off of--let me report that I am baffled by a feature it has added to its news program. The feature is called "Flashback" and it consists of film shot of events. that happened during the 1950's: Now it is entirely pbssime mat this could be a nice, nostalgic little feature--if anyone ever bothered to tell you just what it is you're looking at. But what happens: is that film of totally unidentified people doing completely forgotten things flashes across the screen to the loud accompaniment of some 1950's musical number There is absolutely no explanation of what is going on. It's like watching old home movies without being told what they're about. (I .am happy to report that I'm notalone in this regard. I just took a quick, unofficial poll of 10 people who said they watched WCHS news and, to a man, they confessed they were totally confused by "Flashback." "I remember some of those people like Mayor John Copenhaver and Gov. Underwood," said one of my polices, "but I can't figure out what in the world they're supposed ; to be doing. I think I might enjoy it if the station would add some narration to tell me what it's all about.") *· Continuing my sampling of summer variety programs, I turned on "The Manhattan Transfer" last Sunday and there, fans, is musical nostalgia compleat. What Manhattan Transfer is a quartet-two men and two women--who sing songs of the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's using the original arrangements. The group did an old Glenn Miller number and I could have closed my eyes and sworn it was 1942 and they were the Modernaires or somebody. WOWK will attempt to hypo its viewership beginning next Sunday by cutting all network summer rerun programming and showing instead for two weeks two movies a night. The movie lineup for -the 15 nights is pretty good and includes such, films as'"Stalag.l7." "Bullitt." "Firecreek." "On The .Waterfront,"."It Happened One Night," "Fail Safe." "Good Neighbor . Sam." "Born Yesterday," "All The King's Men." "Bonnie and Clyde," "Giant," "The Wild One," "Is Paris Burning?" "Hombre,"' "A Star Is Born." "The Agony And The Ecstacy." "Von. Ryan's Ex^press." "Days Of Wine and Roses," "CatBallou." "From Here To Eternity," "The King and I," "The . Harder They Fall," "Samson and Delilah." "Cool Hand Luke," "The Green Berets," "The Hustler," " "The Music Man,'" "The Last Hurrah," "The Caine Mutiny," and . "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington,": There are a couple of dogs in there but, by and large, it's a good package. Watch f or - BIG EDDIE. (Premiere).
