-July 11, 1976 Sunday Ga*ette-Mail Chtrlttftn, Wtit Vlrjlnla -Otherwise- Speed Limit Should Be 50 ByTomFetfcrmu There's a drive in the country that's going to fast for my blood. Some misdirected people want the highway speed limit raised from 55 to 65 : m.p.h. They claim the 55 J limit is for slow learners. I, agree that the 55 m.p.h. limit is wrong. Actually it should be 50. I've gone thousands of miles in dozens of states, trying speeds ranging from»20 to 85, and find there's something wrong with all speeds except 50. Fesperman *,* * IT'S HARD to analyze, but speeds below 50 are too jerky. Americans simply can't hold steady at 45. Their minds wander. They start thinking about old sweethearts, or the days of Kennedy's Camelot. They get dreamy, and let up, until they're moping at 35. Coming to, they press down to regain lost time. Their cars start jerking and quivering, and before they know it they're running up on heavily laden pickup trucks. Above 55, something odd happens to the mind. It becomes belligerent and jealous. Paranoia sets in. Anybody who tries to pass looks like a hit man. We can't control ourselves at 65. We, forget the teachings of our fathers. We become defiant of authority. We take on the mood of the anarchist. There is a tightness in the forehead. * * * WE FUNCTION BEST at 50. The blood pressure remains constant, the body chemistry undisturbed. We retain empathy for our neighbors and remember the teachings of our fathers. The forehead stays loose. Each vehicle should be equipped with a gizmo that holds the speed exactly at 50, no more, no less. In this way no one will ever pass'anyone else. Jealousies will disappear. A certain philosophical mood will float over the countryside, the rocks and rills and drive- ins. We will save billions on hyperactive engines, obsolete wide tracks and swollen carburetors. But there's more than that. Everyone will be able to compute precisely how long it will take to get where he's going. If your committee is convening 12.5 miles away, it will take exactly 15 minutes. For the first time in our history, no one will be late to any meeting. There's no telling what all we can accomplish finally, with everybody there on time.
