August 17,1975 WEEK'S HOUSE Basic Building Economy Emphasized In Split-Entry Rancher With Flair The Eioderfl kitchen can be reached from tbe ealrv area v«h«jt crossing aoy rootns and has direct access to the backyard through sliding glass doors opening to the porch. The kiteheo is convenient to living and dining room sen-ice as well as the porch. The wall of glass doors, besides being a great convenience, make for a bright and airy housdiold area, and give an open feeling to the family dining area which is included in the kitchen. There are three bedrooms and two baths to the right of the «atry area. The bedrooms have excelled ventilation and ample wail space with no costly gimmkts The coaster bedroom features a private bath with stall shower, with the family bath placed back-to-back for plumbing economy. The lower level of the house has an oversized two-car garage with room for storage. There is also a large family recreation area, with built-in snack bar. and a utilitv 'laundrv room. By ANDY LANG Beginning with a simple rectangular foundation, this split-entry ranch emphasizes basic building economy. While the split entry feature in Design R-129 puts it in the category of a raised Slightly Lower Rancher Is Traditional Style Roof Overhang Enhances Exterior Design Interest ranch, the main living level is only three steps up from the entry foyer, giving the exterior of a house a lower profile than usual in this type of house. WOOD SHINGLES are shown on the outside, but horizontal siding, if preferred, is equally suitable to the traditional windows and trim. The front elevation has been given added interest by architect Lester Cohen with the turning of the roof over the bedroom wing and the extension over the entry porch. Entry through the sidelighted front door is onto the split-level foyer, which has two large coat closets and steps leading to the upper and lower levels of the house. The use of open railing here creates a pleasant, spacious area which makes a favorable introduction to the house. Three steps up, a central hallway leads to the living areas to the left and the bedrooms to the right. The living and dining rooms form a large L-shape ready to handle a variety of entertainment functions. The living room is spacious, while the dining room is almost square -- which is excellent for dining furniture placement -- and features sliding glass doors opening to a covered porch. She knows I have to bleach some wood soon and she maintains that, since her liquid laundry bleach does such a good job on clothes, it will work just as well on wood! Is she right? I don't want to spoil the wood. A.--She is right--to a degree. Liquid laundry bleach will lighten some woods which have coloring in them. They will not take out color as well as the commercial bleaches, which can be purchased in hardware stores and some lumber yards. If you want to try household bleach, test it on a piece of the wood which is not visible, such as the underside of a table which you intend to bleach. No matter what kind of bleach you use, be sure to wear rubber gloves and work very carefully. Also, use a synthetic fiber brush, since the bleach often will damage a brush with natural bristles. Garden Court Westmont Shown Q.--What is the advantage of waterproof sandpaper over the regular kind? A.--When it is used wet ? as it should be, it does not tend to get clogged. Q.--I have to stain some fir plywood. I had a similar job a few years ago and recall that I had quite a bit of trouble. Part of the grain came out one color and part another. Is there any way to eliminate the problem? A.--Becasue of its wild grain, fir plywood must be sealed properly so that the stain will take more evenly. The same procedure is necessary even when the surface is to be painted, since the grain tends to come through the paint after a period of time. Be sure to buy a sealer which is made specifically for use on fir plywood: it should say so on the label. There are two kinds, one for use on a surface which is to be given a clear coat and one for a surface which is to be painted. '398. Garden Court Parkview S 348.
