Ramsey, Jr. The Grafton Guardian GRAFTON, W.Va. ( A P ) - Amil E. Rose has learned the truth of the old adage that the greatest treasures are in your own backyard. But it doesn't hurt to take some time to help Mother Nature out. Ross, who has caught 2,165 fish in his 40-year career, landed the two biggest bass of his life right in his own backyard lake this year. The first one, caught last October, weighed eight pounds. The second weighed eight and three-fourths pounds and was caught in July just before a thunderstorm. Fed Him Line Quickly "Just as soon as I started to pull my line in to go in, I felt him strike," Rose said. "He broke water high as the ceiling, but I fed him the line quickly to keep him from breaking the line." When he finally hauled the bass in, "he rose to try one more dive underneath the boat, and when his head came up, I pulled him in." Although the entire episode lasted only a few seconds, it was the result of years of careful study of fish habits and fishing expertise as well as a good lake stocking prpgram. When Rose purchased his Taylor County Drivers Tune Their Cars For Talladega TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - The 50 driv- ,, ers who earned starting berths in the Talladega 500 auto race had three hours Saturday to tune the machines and make practice runs on the Alabama International Motor Speedway track. The cars were impounded under guard last Sunday when rains postponed the $157.000 race. The NASCAR Grand National event was rescheduled for 12:30 p.m. ' this Sunday. Officials released the cars at 1 p.m. Saturday and locked them up again promptly at 4 p.m. Some 65,000 race fans turned out to watch the raindrops last week. Track officials said all rain checks would be honored, and some 20,000 additional tickets were to go on sale early Sunday. The weatherman predicted mostly sunny skies and hot temperatures for the new starting time--along with a 40 per -cent chance of rain. Italian Horse Is Kidnapped After Victory MONTECATINI. Italy (AP) - Wayne Eden, one of Italy's most successful trotters, was snatched from his stall early- Saturday at the race track of this Tuscan .spa just hours after winning a $15,000 purse. Track officials said the American- bred 5-year-old bay disappeared between 4 and 6 a.m. The stall door was found unlocked and a ventilation window, large enough for a small person to climb through, was open. The horse apparently was led out through an opening in the barbed wire surrounding the stall area. "There is no way the horse could have walked out by himself," a track source said. Wayne Eden, out of Rebecca Eden by Speed Rodney, has earned $320,000 for his Milanese industrialist owner. Track sources said the horse has a market value of $800,000 and that thieves tried to grab the animal once before, but the attempt, at another track, was thwarted. On Friday night. Wayne Eden won the City of Montecatini grand prix before a big holiday crowd, setting a track record for a kilometer. His time was 1:15.7. The old record was i: 16.3. ^ farm in 1958, it had a four acre lake on it. "I improved it, fenced it and restocked it with bass and crappie," he recalled. "I wanted to bring fishing to me instead of having to travel to fishing spots elsewhere." Have to Know Fish Although Rose says patience and good hand coordination is necessary for successful fishing, but says knowledge is nearly as important in the sport. "You have to know fish and lakes," he said. "You have to know when to move your fly and when to hold it still; when to have it near the bottom and when to have it near the top." A good fisherman also has to work at his success, he explained. In a large wooden-covered log book, Rose has recorded nearly every moment spent fishing, every .line he has cast and every f i s h he has c a u g h t . Miss Savereide, at 19 the youngest ever to win this event, qualified as one of two U.S. representatives in the women's international tournament in 1976, and she has also qualified for the title of international woman master. Ruth Herstein of Los Angeles and Ruth I. Orton of Fayettesville, Ark., tied for second position with 6Y2 to 3V Z records. Later this year they will play a match to determine which of them will join Miss Savereide as the second U.S. competitor in the women's zonal next year. The U.S. Chess Federation noted that every one of the top 11 rated women in the U.
