Friday Movies (Cont.) "WATERLOO," (1971) **%. De- spite'a lavish budget, the use of the Russian army (20,000 men and 3,000 horses), and the able direction of epic filmmaker Sergei Bondarchuk, this production of Napoleon's escape from exile, rise to.power and subsequent defeat by the combined forces of England, Austria, Prussia, and Russia is a static and confusing "spectacle. Rod Steiger provides a bitter, but overdrawn portrayal of the charismatic French general, while Christopher Plummer is too low-key as the victorious Wellington. 9 p. m., (D 3) "WHO.'S MINDING THE STORE?"(1963) *»A. Jerry Lewis' uncritical fans will get a few forced laughs from his antics as a department store flunky who's'in love .with the boss's daughter (Jill St John). Though labored, there is one funny scene as Jerry sells some shoes to a muscular lady wrestler 11:30 p. m., QCD "MR. 880,^ (1950) ***%, with Burt Lancaster and Dorothy McGuire. Charming story about a T- man and a United Nations secretary who investigate a lovable old counterfeiter. Edmund Gwenn shines as the money-maker. 3 a m., O (1940) **, with Betty Grable and Don Ameche. A lot of talent is wasted in this silly musical about the romance of an American heiress and a South American cowboy. Ends with a big horse race and you'll be glad to see it end. 4:30 a. m., O Saturday Movies (Cont.) "ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE," (1958) ·*, with Lana Turner and Barry Sullivan. Soapy stuff about a lady correspondent during WWII, who engages in a hopeless affair with a married man, suffers a breakdown when he is killed 12:30 a.m., O. gart and Lauren Bacall. This is when the two lovebirds met and the picture has a good romance and plenty of intrigue to boot. Bogey is a fisherman in this one and between fishing for Nazis he manages to hood Lauren. 12:30 a.m., CD. "THE STRANGE DOOR," (1952) */z, with Charles Laughton aiid Boris Karloff. A horror tale OWENS DRIVE IN that is intended to be chilling, but is often laughable instead. 1 a.m., "LADIES IN LOVE," (19361, **%, with Janet Gaynor and Loret-* ta Young. Strictly for the ladies is this overly romantic tale of the affairs of four beautiful girls in Budapest. Lots of familiar faces in the cast. 3:15 a.m., O.
