11* JIM WVUin Conference 'Not Near Fruition 9 ^r - _ _. ^l_ . _ * _ « * _ L 1^1, ,, ~,,1 » _ I) 3 DR. LELAND BYRD * \'o Takers Tk# At,taeiate4 fret* West YirgHual'aiY- ersity Athletic Director Dr. Inland Bvrd says his school has wanted to form an athletic conference "for the past five or six years," but has had no takers. West Virginia has been an independent since withdrawing from the Southern Conference after the 1968 school year. Dr. Byrd said West Virginia wants to align "with universi- ties thai we eaa be eocapeti- tive with, both athletically and academically/' lie said WVU has "talked vp" the idea with schools such as Peon State, Pittsburgh and Syracuse--"our natural rivals"- pkis Array. Navy, Bostoa College and Temple. "But the idea is not near fruition." Byrd added. He explained that West Virginia's interests lie more with Eastern schools than with those in the Midwest or South, although there are several major ndpeadeois in the latter areas that reportedly seek to form a new conference. One of the reasons for the Eastern orientation, Byrd admits, is recruiting. "Most of our recruiting is done in the East--Pennsylvania, New York, Washington, Maryland, Ohio and the like." Therefore, Byrd explaind. it wouldn't serve WVU to form a league with, for tasiaace, Louisville, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Tulane. South Carolina, St. Louis, Florida State or Miami--independents all, but gecrgraphicaliy in the Midwest and South. West Virginia is now a member of the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) but the purview of that organization is mainly administrative. "The ECAC is not a playing conference." said Bvrd. "For iasiaoee, members of the ivy League are also in the ECAC, but compete athletically with the Ivy League." One of the advantages of a conference, Byrd said, is scheduling--but scheduling is also a major pitfall "When you are in, say, an eight-team conference, seven of your football games each year are set against other teams in the conference. In basketball, you usually play a home-andhome series each se- ries, so that's 14 games each year. "However," he eoaueued, "it would lake several yeais to align the football schedules so that you are playing a conference schedule. Football schedules are made up seven or eight years in advance, and most schools are pretty well locked in to those schedules. "It's not so bad in basketball. Those schedules are usually just two to four years in advance," he added. Toe schools Byrd meouooed as possible candidates for a new league are iadependeat financially as well as athletically. While conferences share receipts from bowl games, basketball tournaments and television contracts, an independent keeps the entire amount. For schools like Peon State, which appears in a bowl game almost every year, it may be difficult to convince them to share a prize that has been theirs alone. f»,j si* Lowe's invites you to come backstage and meet the stars!
