N.C. * - Jerry Paul, the chief defense counsel for Joan Little, remained in jail Saturday on charges of contempt of court. "We've already talked by telephone with members of the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court and they said nothing can be done until Monday." Jim Rowan, Paul's chief attorney, said Saturday. Miss Little, a 21-year-old black, was acquitted Friday of second-degree murder in the icepick slaying of her white jailer. Miss Little is free on bond pending an appeal of a breaking and entering conviction for which she was confined at the time of the slaying. . Paul was cited for contempt during the second day of the trial after complaining that trial Judge Hamilton Hobgood was favoring the prosecution and commenting that the judge was prejudiced against the defense. He made the comments to the public section of court but no prospective jurors on the one chosen juror were pre- cont Paul said that Hobgood had refused to allow the line of questioning that the defense used to screen prospective jurors. The questioning was based on psychological and sociological studies and surveys conducted in 23 North Carolina counties. He also asked Hobgood to remove himself from the case. Miss Little said the judge cited Paul, who began serving his 14-day sentence on Friday because the state wanted revenge for her acquittal. "They had to send somebody to jail, so they sent Jerry for 14 days," she said. Mary Ann Largin, coordinatoj^)t_tne£ia- Uonal Organization for Women s Rape Task Force, issued a statement Saturday saving the group "deplores" the jailing of Paul. . The chairman of the billion-dollar Seagram's company, world's largest distillers, rushed to his Fifth Avenue House penthouse in the early morning hours amid reports that a break in the eight-day old case was imminent. Hours passed and as tension mounted a spokesman told newsmen: "They are still optimistic, but the level of concern is still there. "Mr. Bronfman and his family are remarkably steadfast. "Their faith that this guy is coming home alive and well has never faltered." Otherwise the situation was cloaked in silence. "The lid is on tighter than ever," an FBI spokesman told newsmen when asked if all or part of a reported $4.5 million ransom demand had been met and if the 21-year-old heir would soon be freed. A FAMILY spokesman said Saturday afternoon that Bronfman "is holding up well and is still optimistic." Bronfman and another man, believed to be an FBI agent, met two other men at 3:40 a.m. in the lobby of the building across from Central Park near the Metropolitan Museum. Doorman Patrick Harnett told reporters one of the men asked Bronfman about his son and the father replied: "I think he's all right: he'll be released in two or three hours." But that time table was not kept, and it was not clear whether Bronfman remained in the building or slipped out by a back entrance. Heavy rains swept the penthouse terrace and drenched newsmen'waiting outside and at the entrance to the Bronfman mansion 40 miles north of Manhattan in Yorktown Heights. There were unconfirmed rdports earlier in the week that Samuel Bronfman had been buried with a 10-day supply of air and water. The elder Bronfman. 46, was to have married Georgiana Eileen Webb, 25, of England on Saturday, but the festivities- planned for Yorktown Heights--were postponed. It was to be his third marriage. * * * THE WEDDING reception was to have coincided with a house-warming at the 180-acre estate which Bronfman bought 18 months ago after his divorce from the former Ann Margaret Loeb. daughter of a Laos Links Ousted Thais To Sabotage TOKYO (AP) - Laos has charged that two Thai military attaches it expelled Friday were members of a sabotage team for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a Hanoi broadcast reported Sunday. The broadcast, monitored here, quoted a Lao Foreign Ministry statement as saying the Thais entered Laos in 1966 to "serve the U.S. war of aggression" and were directed by a CIA unit in Udorn. Thailand. "After thoroughly studying the nature of the spying activities of these two Thai nationals, the Lao Provisional Government of National Union decided to expel them from Laos immediately." the broadcast said. Maj. Prasert Thongpiew and Lt. Col. Lert Pungpak were expelled Friday. They told a news conference in Bangkok that they were forced at gunpoint to sign a confession. The officers denied they had spied in Laos but refused to give details of the confession they signed. Hanoi's broadcast said the attaches used false identity cards and automobile license plates, but it gave no specific instances of spying. The officers were arrested at their residence Aug. 5 and their detention strained relations between Thailand and Laos. Thailand expelled two Lao diplomats and threaten* to recall its ambassador. * multimillionaire broker. He gave the deeds to his second wife. Sam, a fr-foot-3 June graduate of Williams College, was last seen eight days ago when he dined with his father in Yorkshire Heights. At 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, Samuel telephoned his father and said he had been kidnaped by three men while on his way to his mother's home in Purchase, another affluent Westchester county suburb. The family TaidTMonday that it was in contact with the kidnapers and then on Thursday appealed for more evidence that "Sam is alive and well," at the same time pledging to obey any instructions relayed over a secret telephone number.
