JM«*23,1974 STAN SMITH Beats Soviet Ace Smith Nabs Title NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) - Big Stan Smith of the United States, fighting his way back to form, beat Soviet ace Alex Metreveli 6-3,1-6, b-3 Saturday and won the $100,000 John Player Tennis Tournament. Smith overcame a deficiency in his service m i d w a y through the match in registering a morale-boosting victory just in time for Wimbledon, which begins its two-week run Monday.
