_ August 17,1975- Sunday Ga*»fte--WatJ CT __ _ _______r»i»r ! _fiu:t-^ MC4 VtTAlA'tJh-- -- -- -Tired of Paying the Rent, Citizens Buy Whole Town Italy's Kidnap Industry Turns to Horses GERLACH. Nev. (AP)-The citizens of Gerlach were tired and disgusted after paying land rent for the past half-century so they bought this tiny town for $18.000. "Yeah, we just couldn't see paying all ! that rent and not actually owning any- · thing." said Joe Ugalde. president of the Gerlach Leaseholders Association, which · spearheaded the purchase from the Western Pacific Railroad. "We had only one - choice--buy the town." 1 The f i nal papers on the deal were signed 1 last week. - For the $18.000. the leaseholders asso- " elation got 219 acres of land where the : town sits, and a water system that sup- · plies this sun-parched area of the state. · "It wasn't a bad price when you consi- der what the price of land is going for today." he said. "But really there's not much here. Come to think of it. that's a high price for just old flat alkaline dirt land." Gerlach has a population of about 75 and is located about 100 miles north of Reno. It was founded, or created, by the railroad in 1909 as a watering stop for steam locomotives. While many of the railroad's passengers headed west into California from points east, a few got off at Gerlach and made it their home. The town thrived while the locomotives kep chugging through, but the chugging faded into history in .the 1950s and so did many of the town's residents. "Now I guess we've got about 75 people in the area, and you might have to count a dog or two to get the population that high." Ugalde said. Most of the businesses went the way of the railroad. Ugalde says there are two gas stations left, along with four bars, two restaurants, and his propane gas business located in his house. Most people in the area are engaged in ranching or farming. To buy food, residents have to go to Empire some six miles to the south. Population of that town, 200. Actually, the leaseholders association is the legal owner of the town at this time. MONTECATINI. Italy AP)-Italy's kidnap industry, already rich from abductions of people, apparently branched out into horses Saturday with the disappearance of an American-bred trotter that has won more than $300.000. Wayne Eden, a 5-year-old bay. was snatched from his stall at the race track of this Tuscan spa just hours after winning a $15.000 purse. A helicopter and police dogs fanned out across Tuscany province in search of him. Industrialist Piero Giudici, owner of Wayne Eden, said his main worry was that the horse might be confined for some days or given different food from what he normally eats. "In that case, he could develop a violent colic and die." said Giudici. "If he has been taken away by persons who know this business they will know how to treat the horse; he has to be let free to move." Informed sources said the presumed kidnapers had not yet made contact about possible ransom. Track officials said the horse disap- Track sources said toe horse has a mar- peared between 4 and 6 a JM.
