3E -July 4, 1976 Sunday Gazette-Mail · Charleston, West Virginia Johnson, Washington Shine in 110-82 Loss By Paul Wallace Tha New York City Hawks, bolstered by by a shooting percentage of 58.6, captured a 110-82 victory over the shorter West Virginia All-Stars in the second annual Jerry West Basketball Classic Saturday at the Civic Center. All-Americans Albert King and Wayne McKoy, both only juniors, led the Hawks with 20 and 16 points respectively even though they played very little in the second half. The West Virginia team jumped out to leads of 8-0 and 18-5 before the New Yorkers' experience and height advantage began taking their toll. . The Hawks took the lead for good with 6:23 left in the first half on a basket by Arthur Graham to make the score 32-30. Graham finished the first half with three straight baskets to give the Hawks their biggest first-half margin at 48-38. Two free throws by Will Johnson made the score 48-40 at halftime. DuPont's Johnson finished as West Virginia's leading scorer with 22 points and Martinsburg's Lewis Washington followed with 21 points. They were selected as most valuable players for the West Virginians and will share the $500 scholarship awarded to the top player. The Hawks shot 59.5 per cent in the first half (22-3?) and 58 per cent in the second half (29-50). King, a 6-6 forward, hit six of seven shots to lead the Hawks in the first Charlies To Regain Moreno NORFOLK, Va.-The. Charleston Charlies received good news Saturday, although their International League baseball game here was rained out. The Charlies, who defeated Tidewater by 9-2 Friday night for their 21st win in 35 games, got the word that speedster Omar Moreno will rejoin them in time for tonight's 7 p. m. game at Richmond. Moreno played with the Charlies until being called up June 20 to fill a spot on the injury-riddled Pirates' roster. Bob Robertson, who was on the disabled list, will be activated by the Pirates, bringing on Moreno's return to the International League where he will team with Miguel Dilone to give the Charlies speed to burn on the base paths. Moreno made quite an impression during the nationally televised Philadelphia- Pittsburgh game Saturday afternoon. As a pinchhiUer in the seventh inning, Diione rifled a drive along the right field line. His speedand head-first slide into third base earned a triple and he scored on a pinch single by Ed Kirkpatrick. Charleston and Tidewater played three and one-half scoreless innings Saturday night around rain delays before the game was washed out. Odell Jones will be the Charlies' starting pitcher tonight at Richmond. Palmer's 67 Ties Garner BLOOMINGTON. Ind. (AP) - Sandra Palmer fired a fourunder-par 67 Saturday to share the lead with JoAnne Garner going into the final round of the $50,000 Ladies Professional Golf Association Bloomington Bicentennial Classic. "The kids played well," West Virginia coach Sam Andy said. "They held their own for a while. I think the people underestimated them. "Will Johnson can play with anyone I've seen. Andre White and Lewis Washington also played well." The West Virginians received praise from New York's assistant coach, Howie Evans. "This team played together much better than any others we have played," Evans said. "Johnson was one of the better kids we've played against. He played real well and he never gave up." When asked if his team played well, Evans said: "Not really. The kids are tired. They had to play three games Sunday and some games during the week. A lot of the kids had to get up at 4:30 and 5 this morning to catch our 8 o'clock flight." The Hawks have been the national AAU champions in the under-19 division for the past three of four years. There were several good plays on the part of both teams during the game. Beckley's White made a driving layup over McKoy late in .the first half. This seemed to fire McKoy up and he went down the court and made a slam dunk. White also had a tremendous blocked shot in the first half. King went way up over the basket to slam a rebound right back through the hoop that aroused the fans. N.Y. Pl«y«r Chisholm... Kavanagh.
