AND LOAN COMPANY Surface mining was in no way I the primary cause of the recent Mingo Flood according to preliminary reports of an investigation being conducted by the West Virginia Surface Mining and Reclamation Assn. Ben Lusk. executive director of the association, said Saturday that recent reports blaming surface mining for the flooding in Gilbert were unfounded and the result of shallow study. Lusk said the study revealec ithat there was more than 1( i inches of rain during a 12-hour j period and that the real cause for the dissimination of debris, throughout the area appears to be a bedload movement, which occurs when a large amount ol i debris is collected and washed iaway all at one time In addition, he said, there I were about 25 landslides at Cow (Branch and there were no surface mining operations in the area. Nor was there any surface mining near Slab Town which had numerous landslides He said the investigating team could find only one area in the entire watershed where surface mining might have contributed' to flooding. The association's investigation! team consists of a researcher, registered engineer, reclamation specialist and a specialist inl water quality and turbidity. The! results of the investigation will! be made public, Lusk said. j Ben Lusk Hits Shallow Report LLOYD'S DEPARTMENT STORE uptl 169 SUMMERS ST. CHARLESTOI lltfai ilHT ·'*-- "^ ill£ .Ik. .ilik.
