Church group to sponsor three-day bluegress festival By Jim Carnes This must be the summer tor mountain music festivals in West Virginia. First there was the Skyline Bluegrass Festival, and now it's a Bicentennial Picnic and Celebration scheduled for a 170-acre farm near Walkersville on July 2. 3 and 4. This three-day bluegrass and boogie festival is sponsored by the Universal Life Church. The celebration is part of the church's efforts to raise funds for opening and maintaining an alternative school in Central West Virginia. While the festival may lack some of the big name artists associated w i t h the Skyline f e s t i v a l , it includes some of the finest area and regional talents. Among them are: the M o r r i s Brothers. Mike Morn i n g s t a r . Trapezoid, Southside Junction. Wheat Straw, the Blues Mountain Band, the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys, the Kentucky Foothill Ramblers.'all state bands, plus. Cahoots f r o m New Brunswick, N.J.. the T. Gosney Thornton Band from Austin. Tex., and the James-Wayne Duo from Orlando. Fla. There are plans to film the festival as well as record it. with a two- record lp hoped for from the three- day affair. Advance tickets, priced at $10 for the three days, are a v a i l a b l e at several locations throughout the state, i n c l u d i n g : P e p p e r l a n d in Charleston; Jessie's Pizza, the Purple Thumb and the As You Like It Boutique in Buckhannon; Tanner's Crossroads in Spencer, and Sights and Sounds in Montgomery. Advance tickets are available by mail, too. if you include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Send it to the Universal Life Church, Rt. 1. Box 31. Walkersville, W. Va. 26447. Festival organizer Justin Thyme encourages anyone planning to attend the celebration to buy the $10 advance tickets. At the gate, prices will be 515 for the weekend on Friday. $12.50 on Saturday, and $8 on Sunday. Better hurry if you intend to order by mail, though. As far as directions to the site go. I'm not too sure. Perhaps the best bet from Charleston is to take Interstate 79 north to Exit 90. Go to Walkserville and take Abrams Run out to a dirt road that will take you to the farm site. Maybe you should ask directions in Walkersville. There will be free parking and camping in the rough. Water will be a v a i l a b l e and there w i l l be a general store on the grounds. SUPREME SINGER Diane Ross and husband Robert Silberslein are no longer together. He manages certain performers, including Billy Preston who plays with the Rolling Stones, and recently SHberstein was in London with his client. When he returned, so the talk goes, he found his stuff gone from the house and a note from his wife of five years telling him she'd sent it off to a storage company.
