Allan Clarke's Tve Got Time'well-done set | By Jim Carnes j | I don't know where Allan Clarke ;has been these past few years, but ijf he's been making records, I want ' ;to run out and buy them all. He has Ithe kind of voice that immediately -Sounds familiar--is it the Hollies? .CiOne wonders; the Bee Gees?--and jone that does justice to many different kinds of material. "i Clarke has an album called I've .%/ Time, (Asylum 7E-1056), and it .·is one of the most appealing pieces .;of vinyl I've heard lately. 5 At limes, the singer sounds like !Bruce Springsteen (especially Hvhen he's singing Springsteen's }.niinded by the Light; at other Uimes. he just sounds nice--familiar, smooth, quite nice. Clarke interprets the material here quite -iwell: the arrangements are good: : the set exceedingly well-done. - Best cuts i n c l u d e : We\-c Cot Time, Rlinded. Hallelujah freedom and Sunrise. Just when the disco craze was becoming boring comes a new twist-; p u t t i n g some oldies to the new beat. Dim-over Me by Shaw (London ; Records SP 44256). is a nicely · danceable set. - The British music scene is a little . weird these days, what with Glen : Miller in the Top 20 recently, and : The Beatles back on the charts, but this British set deserves some recognition. Produced on a 20-channel ; mixer with fine musical arrangements.. Shaw's set is fine. Among the finer pieces are More, Tire Lnterlainer, Rubbling Rrown Stif-nr and the oldies, //me High the Moon and Surrey With the Fringe on Top. Surrey, by Hie way features a lop-notch Ilerbie Mann typo f l u t e . Another big British boom--isn't he always? 1 --is Elton John. And John's new set is actually an old one. At least, it contains old material. There's nothing new here, but the past material gets some good reworkings in a live set. Love .Song is the single from the set. and it features the voice of the girl who wrote it. Tt's a treat. The only thing missing is Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and John has yet to put it on an album. Welcome Rack. Koticr is one of the few hits on TV this season, 1 understand, and the theme from it is a genuine radio hit. It's by John Seb a s t i a n , and the former Lovin' Spoonful performer has named his latest a l b u m a f t e r it: Welcome Rack (Warner Brothers. MS2249). I wish I could say it's a consistently strong album, but 1 can't. Sebastian is an engaging personality, and sometimes his music is wonderful. Welcome llnfk, the single, has the same. fun. good--time feel of the old Spoonful: most of the rest of the music here doesn't, though. Itidn't W(int to Have, to Do It. from the Spoonful days is good, and the rueful A .S'unp « Hay in \nsln-ille is excellent. Of the rest, listen to . (I «rm Raby and Shu's Funny, but skip the rest. Me .Voir Or Relief,: .Me Liner is the t i t l e of Diana Trask's n o w a l b u m ( A B C R e c o r d s ; ABCDP-948).-and I'm a believer. Ms. Trask is one of the more popular country and western singers, and with a little luck, this album will break her into the pop field. It has some good material. I especially like A'eir I'p'rA- Ciiv Song with its striking lonely harmonica line provided by Ben Benay. It would be a highpoint of any album. Among the other goodies here are Hock Me Street, All Alone in Austin and Fallen Angel. Louden Wainwright III has a new album called T-Shin (Arista AL- 4063) and it is one of the most clever sets around. Wainwright is a topflight satirist and he tackles some nice topics in T-Shirt. Leading off the set is a tribute to America's 200th birthday, some- t h i n g C'alk'd Rirenlennial. It's CX- a c t l y w h a t we need. The lyrics make reference to such American treasures as "Oklahoma's strange panhandle" and such native heroes as Washington. Lincoln and Jack Ruby (Wasn't Jack grand?" i. I laughed throughout the album, including at something called Summer's Almost Over which warns that it's time to get ready for school a g a i n , lime to "don jock straps and cups Talking iHg Apple '7~ is a hit and Prince Hal's Dirfie is m a s t e r f u l . "Take me to the whorehouse, take me lo the alehouse: if I throw up keep me off of my back" he orders. I love it. Wainwright is a rock'n'roll comic genius.
