Rool There are freaky people- and then there are freaky people. And David Bowie is" 1 among the freakier. Scheduled to appear in concert at the Civic Center on June 28, Bowie is among the most innovative and creative performers in rock today. His show will be the year's most interesting presentation. At 26, he has been in and out of the music business for 11 years, moving from a modern jazz quartet in \vhich he played sax through a progressive blues group to an acoustic act into what he does now, which can't be categorized. He has been a commercial artist, an actor, writer and producer and he's. been into mime and mixed media presentations. His show often includes a dance troupe whose work he Choreographs. "He also designs his and their costumes. For Bowie "Space Oddity" was "the first single I ever really wanted to release." Its a bone-chilling record, one of the most unusual recordings.ever released! In its arrangement can be heard inferences of the Bee Gees, the effect of The Beatles, but most of all the creative talent of. David Bowie. The harrowing tale of .Major Tom is a. masterpiece with a haunting melody and refrain and uncommon insights (for example that of the astronaut, "Here am I sitting in my tin can."). The single was released about four years ago and sold very well in England and Europe, but didn't take hold in the United States, probably because its release came at the time of the Apollo 11 moon shot. , "Space Oddity" is about a fictional astronaut who loses himself in space, escaping" the ugly plastic situation in SHOK TIME. June 16,974 which he is trapped on earth. Major Torn, the hero of the disc, says Bowie, "is the hero -- the anti-hero if you like. He is a loser and this has a huge sphere of identification in peoples' minds; there are so many losers and they all think that if they'd been in Frank Borman's place, for example, something would have certainly gone wrong. "We drew this parallel that the publicity image of a space man at work is of an automaton, rather than a human being and my Major Tom is nothing if not a human being. It came from a feeling of sadness about this aspect of the space thing, it has been dehumanized, so I wrote a song-farce about it, to try and relate science and human emotion... .1 suppose it's an antidote for space fever really." David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in tjje Bromley section of London on Jan. 8, 1947. "I never wanted and I never went hungry," he says, "but I saw people deprived around me and kids going to school with their shoes falling apart and I suppose, yes. it did leave an impression on me that I wanted... .to have better." He attended Bromley Technical High School (one of his schoolmates was Peter Frampton, formerly of The Herd and Humble Pie, now of Frampton's Camel) but dropped out at 16. The major therrte of Bowie's music is change; his songs are often science fic- tion views of the future. Bowie's album'"Hiihky Dory" presented a recurring theme of the inevitability of change. The opening selec-', tion, "Changes", explores the consequences, intensity of personal and social changes. _ First, there is the desperation of youth, wanting things to change swiftly, but not always knowing exactly what new directions to pursue. Later there is the realization that those who push change eventually may change: Look out you rock'n'- r o l l e r s . . . .Pretty soon you're gonna get a little older. .- _ . . · · ·-· The song is encased in a lush orchestration that reminds of Paul McCartney's most melodic works, but underscored with a most un- McCartney chorus in which Bowie stutters to emphasize the rush.power and uncertainty of change: ch-ch-ch-' ch-changes. Bowie's attire is glittery and futuristic. He wears lu- cite jewelry and glass slippers at times. His followers go to greater extremes of boots and baubles. '.untouchable. It's like he doesn't belong here...." Bowie's latest album, "Diamond Dogs" is perhaps his best. It is an apocalyptic view of a future in which "gnats the size of rats gnaw on rats the size of cats. .".." .. ...It also contains the song "1984," which Bowie performed on his special "Midnight Special" a few months back. You might call "Diamond Dogs" Bowie's version of George Orwell's "1984." It is as frightening and as impressive. Bowie's presentation here by National Shows is a coup of sorts -- the singer hasn't been in the States for awhile, and this tour is not too extensive. It will be a must concert, the only drawback of which will be that most of the audience will be trying to out-Bowie Bowie in dress and behavior. SWIMMING POOL SALE! ABOVE BELOW GROUND IN STOCK NOW! The musical complexity of his compositions, the power of his lyrics, the versatility of presentation are nothing short of amazing. He is a genius, or as his manager Tony DeFries once said: "He's a real star.
