Swinging Singles Land By Carolanne Griffith Martinique'! strictly a wow-place smack dab in the middle of the Caribbean's blue waters where the French gals sunbathe topless while the Americans lounge In cutoffs. Still, I went with apprehension. A single gal, alone and not the least bit brave about a vacation sans familiar faces and the comforts of her own civilization. C. 37939 STATE MAGAZINE, August 20,1972. a gentle push to head me home again. The key to the joy was Club Mediterranee, · network of tiny resort villages operated in conjunction with American Express and Air France. They're scattered all over the world and the vacation package spells inexpensive, luxurious fun. Let's face it, where else can you sit at dinner with a famous French singer (the Frank Sinatra of France, they told u s ) , a schoolteacher f r o m Brooklyn, a Hungarian guitarist and a doctor from Colorado. At Club Med's tiny faraway village at Buccaneer's Creek.anything's possible--not just for singles, but for relaxation--lovers of all ages. It's a slice of the Riviera where the mood's French, the cooking's Creole and just about any tongue's spoken(there's always a friendly English word to be heard in the casual international group on the beaches). The mood's loose. Sure, there are c u l t u r a l gaps-guys straight off the surfboards from California brought peanut butter for their French bread in case they didn't dig the cuisine, while the more gourmet Europeans devoured sea urchins and fried bananas in a tingle meal, washing it down with red wine. Hours? Who bothered to look at a watch--the sun did the work. Few of us stayed in the air-conditioned bungalows longer than the 40 winks it took to get us going toward the numerous water sports the daylight hours offered-scuba boats headed for deep waters, the ski boat pulled skiier after skiier, and the snorkel masks got a workout. Instructors were on hand to offer advice and lessons for the not-so- practiced among us. The Europeans (by sign language and interpreters) taught us to play petanque, a crazy game with steel balls, which became an obsession. Even scrabble sets were scattered about the breezy bar area where we all gathered to cool after sunbathing sessions--we soon learned that one game could turn out to be a test of high school French or Italian depending on the gamemate. As for drinks--what Caribbean island's without a million and one rum concoctions? Buying was half the fun since we felt like the Dutch purchasing Manhattan island--at Club Med you trade in money for plastic pop-beads which serve as barter material during the ·stay. I was never alone or peacefully alone, as I wanted it. Walks on the b e a c h , those stereo symphonic concerts by the water each evening, the smiles that bridged language barriers--they all lent a peace to this vacation of escape and dreams. Operation Friendly takes over upon arrival--the staff Of GOs ( g e n t i l s organisateurs--French for 'nice friends') are always on hand to keep up the smiles and the good times. I'd rationalized myself into a new wardrobe fbr my resort vacation. Half the clothes came back unworn, for the biggest change was from bikini to hotpants. It was easy to get a toe stepped on while dancing to the after-dinner band--nobody bothered with shoes. For the escapist, Club Med's the place. But for the tourist, eager to explore the nooks and crannies of a foreign isle, the secluded l i t t l e village i s n ' t recommended. One day, after a few sunny hours of tanning, we took a hike beyond the Club Med private beach areas, on down to where the Martini- quees had pitched tents and dozens of little native children were frolicking in the water. Twenty minutes further, we came to the small town of Saint Anne where we roamed around. This was the extent of the touring. Although the club did offer organized ex- c u r s i o n s -- a t e x t r a cost--many of us were content with our lives as they were evolving on the 48-acre clubsite. Money didn't change hands until the very last day--and then, what a surprise. C o n s i d e r i n g e v e r y t h i n g w a s i n - clusive--from meals to sports to maid service to all the wine we could drink the price (under $200 at peak season) was a steal. Ah, the hustle and bustle of this world seemed so distant--even after a week. That last afternoon--enjoying wine and crepes at the waterside cafe--we began to exchange addresses. "Hey--would you believe this," shouted a gym teacher from Connecticut, "I can't remember my zip code!" Then we all suddenly realized--our escape had been outtasight. · Apartments, Efficiencies Bed Rooms · Restaurant · Golf Privileges Championship courses, including Dunes Club Sauna Bath "··"········oiooeiilioiliHiiiiiiiigiin The .SIioic Place of fiucfcrae If each * *« AMERICAN EXPRESS ·ANKAMERICARQ SUNOCO Seven Days, Six Nights Golden Sands Motel--Buck roc B«*a«-li Modern mottl room with kilchon wnili. 1 to 4 poriom.
