(AP) - The National Assoeation for the Advancement of Colored People opens its national convention here Monday, faced with a variety of policy decisions and a question of future leadership. The leaders will address themselves to the issues of unemployment, education, housing, revenue sharing, political action and communications. Also at issue, although not expected to be acted upon during the June 28 through July 2 convention, is who will succeed retiring NAACP executive director Roy Wilkins. * * * WILKINS, 75, will retire Dec. 31 after44 years with the civil rights organization. He has served at its helm for the past 22 years. "I would anticipate that the selection of Mr. Wilkins' successor would be smooth," said Maxine Smith, executive secretary of the Memphis NAACP branch. "But the executive directorship of the NAACP is a very prestigious honor and I guess everybody feels that they can fill the job." A search committee will screen applicants during the convention and make a recommendation to the NAACP's board of directors later this year. The theme of this year's convention convention is "NAACP-The Soul of 76," in keeping with the Bicentennial celebration. "I feel very deeply that the NAACP is the most American organization in the United States of America," Mrs. Smith Baptists Plan Meeting HILLTOP--The annual session of the New River Valley Missionary Baptist Assn. and the Women's Educational Convention of the New River District will be held here Wednesday through Friday at the Hilltop Baptist Center. The theme will be "The Truth that Makes Us Free." said. "We have always tried to make America live up to what she purports to be more than any other organization." * * * THE NAACP is the nation's oldest civil rights organization and has more than half a million members spread over 1,700 branches. In recent years, it has come under the attack of various other civil rights groups as being outdated. "The fact that we have endured for 67 years and continue to endure indicates that ours is a viable organization." Mrs. Smith said. "Hind it difficult to name any of the so-called radical civil rights organizations which have criticized us because they have usually disappeared after about three years." "I would like to see us work ourselves out of business," she said. "When that happens it would mean we would have achieved our goal of equality and fairness to all."
