Jim* 16,1*74 v«««» ---2 Records Escape Fireballer ANAHEIM (AP) - Fire- bailing Nolan Ryan struck out 19 Boston batters in a 15-inniog marathon and came close to establishing two records--most strikeouts in an extra-inning game and a personal mark for number of pitches in a single game. The Angels won the game Friday night 4-3 on Denny Doyle's run-scoring double. When Ryan left the mound, he was only two strikeouts short of the record for an extra-inning game. Ex-Washington pitcher Tom Cheney fanned 21 Baltimore Orioles in a 16-inning game on Sept. 12. 1962. " Last season the right-han- der had 383 strikeouts, breaking the major league record held by Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers. CHESS Complete BRAKE JOB Save »8 3 DAYS ONLY Runner's-Up U.S. Minus Fischer, Off to Shaky Start By Charles W. Si«z The United States chess team, playing without world champion Bobby Fischer, got off to a shaky start in the 21st Chess Olympiad at Nice, France by barely attaining a 2-2 tie with Canada in the first round of the preliminaries. After Robert Byrne defeated Peter Biyiasas of Canada to give the U.S. an early lead. Lubomir Kavalek of the U.S. threw away his advantage in his game against Duncan Suttles and lost while William Lombardy suffered an endgame los to George Kupreja- nov. Walter Browne of the U.S. struggled from an inferior position to win his game against D. A. Yanofsky and even the match. In the second round, the U.S. chess team easily defeated Rhodesia 4-0. This year's Olympiad set a record with 78 nations represented. The teams are divided into eight preliminary sections out of which the top two qualify for the championship final. In the Hiowing game, Robert Byrne plays the Sicilian Defense with the black pieces to defeat Peter Biyiasas-of Canada. . White Black Biyiasas Byrne 1. P-K4 .P-QB4 2. N-KB3 N-QB3 3. B-N5 P-K3 4 ?
