June 16.1974 All California Race Seen inNCAA Tennis LOS ANGELES Coach Dick GouM oC defending champion Stanford sees his Cardinals in a three-way ail California race for the team title in the 90th annual NCAA tennis championships. "It should be a dogfight between the three of us," Gould said of Pacific-8 Conference champion Stanford. Southern California aad UCLA in the championships which run Monday through Saturday at Southern Cal's David X. Marks Stadium. The Cardinals figured to be the overwhelming favorite until Alex "Sandy" Mayer, 1973 NCAA singles champion, quit school and Pat Dupree, national amateur elaycourt king, came up with tendinitis of the wrist and won't plav. "Now we're just one of the favorites," said Gould, whose team, without Mayer and Dupree, defeated UCLA and USC for the Pac-8 title. Home Owt Edge ''But that was on a neutral court." said GouM. "USC has the homecourt advantage and that's a big edge." Stanford, Southern Cal and UCLA finished one-two-three last year in the NCAA championships, with Houston, Southern Methodist and Miami, Fla.. far behind. "Michigan. Southern Methodist and Houston have strong teams, and perhaps Miami could do something." Gould said, but "on paper the California teams are the leading contenders." The singles title is harder to handicap. "I think any one of 10 players could win it," said Gould". "Last year Sandy and Raul Ramirez of USC were wav ajove the others." Ramirez turned professional and Mayer will do so this summer at Wimbledon if he doesn't sign up earlier with the New York World Team Tennis franchise, Gould said. Leading Cwteafer Some of the leading contenders to succeed Mayer include Stanford's Jim Delaney and John Whitlinger, Southern Cai's John Andrews aad Sashi Mefioa. UCLA's Brian Teacher, the Pac-8 champion. Michigan's Victor Amava. Alabama's Mike Cahill. SMU's George Hardie. Georgia's Bill Kopecky, who stands 6-feet-7. and Maryland's John Lucas. Gould said freshman Nick Saviano plays singles in Dupree's place "and 1 don't feel badly about that at all. In fact. 1 feel we're strong in singles. "With Mayer and Dupree, we'd have at least two of the top four doubles teams. Delaney and Whitlinger have only played together for about a week and a half. Our second team--and how they do is the key to it all for us--is Saviano. only a freshman, and Mark Mitchell, only a sophomore." CUSTOM WIDE TREAD Famous performance tire for new cars...
