Charleston firemen recovered the body of Paul Sammons Jr. of Mud almost two hours after he disappeared beneath the muddy Elk at its confluence with the Kanawha River. * * * CITY POLICE said Sammons and two companions, his first cousin, Andrew Eager, and Danny Allen, both of Ridgeview, Boone County, had been fishing in the stream Saturday afternoon for about two hours, when they decided to lake a swim. The trio swam to a pier of the Kanawha Boulevard Bridge, and started to swim back to the west bank of the Elk, when Sammons started to go under, police said. The Hager youth returned to his cousin, and attempted to pull him back to shore. "But he couldn't hold on, and Sammons went under and never did come back up," said Patrolman Rick Short. Charleston firemen dragged the river until about 7:30 p.m., when they recovered Sammons' body about 25 feet from the riverbank. The body was taken to General Division, Charleston Area Medical Center, for an autopsy. The drowning was investigated by Short and Sgt. Robert Cochran of the Charleston Police Department.
